"Will Widders swap the foxtrot for fox-hunting?

I came across this in my morning draw through the papers from today's Daily Mail as part of a piece about The Duchess of Cornwall.

Has Ann Widdecombe’s unlikely success on Strictly Come Dancing softened hearts near her retirement home in the fox-hunting stronghold of South Devon?

As the redoubtable former Tory MP prepares to perform the least-sexy paso doble in the history of Spanish dancing this weekend, I learn she has until now been less than popular with the folk who live near her white-washed, five-*bedroom *bungalow - which she has re-named Widdecombe’s Rest - on the edge of Dartmoor.

One villager tells me: ‘She has not bedded down well with us. In fact, I’d go as far as to say she is very unpopular. She has made it *abundantly clear she is against fox-hunting, yet she has come to live in the epicentre of the South Devon Hunt.

‘She doesn’t even like drag-hunting. We all *wondered why on earth she would want to move here.’

The hunt is holding its Boxing Day meet in the grounds of a hotel just a short waltz away from Ann’s house.

Hunt chairman Valerie Graham, however, is offering Widders an olive branch. ‘I’ve never met Ann, but in view of her prowess on Strictly, I think we ought to invite her to our annual hunt ball,’ she says. ‘Maybe she can teach us a few new skills."

Personally, I would not attend a Hunt Ball if I knew she was attending. or should that comment be in red! The South Devon should not bother - the lady has made her views clearly known over a very long period of time and voted in favour of the ban and clearly dislikes drag hunting. Don't demean yoursleves.

"But Ann seems unlikely to attend. Of the meet, she retorts: ‘As long as they don’t come into my house and kill my pet cats, then they can carry on with their disgusting activities."

each to their own, she just wants to lead a quiet life with her cats- theres no reason that she should support huntingeven if she has moved to a hunting area!

What's she got against drag hunting?

It is clearly cruel to hunt a drag queen to exhaustion and then tear it to pieces with hounds ;-)

On a more serious note it is nice to see the South Devon acting in a mature way to integrate Ms Widdecombe into their fold. Hunt balls are great fun whether you hunt or not. I can just see her twirling about to Chumba Wumba and Bryan Adams!
