On Saturday I took my new horse to a jumping clinic with William Plunkett, who is a Sussex SJ’er. It was really windy but decided to go ahead anyways as it would be a good test for Chloe. We were in the ‘advanced’ section, so didn’t really know what to expect as I haven’t done much with her at all.

She warmed up well and was a bit on her toes but sensible considering the weather. Will came and chatted to us individually, first thing he said was ‘she’s an excellent model’ and that he really liked her paces etc, so good start!

We started off over a simple cross pole which had to be done in trot, I was surprised that she did it well in trot, as in her world she’d canter everywhere! Then he put up a small upright bounce, so it was X pole bounce to small upright. Once everyone was popping that OK a third element, a vertical one stride after the bounce was added, and finally then two strides from that, an oxer. We built this up to 1.05m for the vertical and oxer and she was jumping it perfectly everytime and really opened up over the oxer - it felt great! William said ‘she jumps an oxer VERY well’, so I was chuffed to bits as this was the first grid we’d done together. I thought this was an excellent grid to use as it tests everything and asks loads of questions, need lots of room though!

After the grid we progressed to building a small course compromising of the grid then keeping the canter round the corner and coming down the long side to a 1.05m upright with a tray underneath, then round and up the diagonal over a rustic oxer with gate fillers, focusing on keeping a forward canter especially on the corners. We finally cracked our working canter (I have tended to come in too slow on her) and even William was impressed when we got ‘John Whittaker’ strides into all the fences and Chloe felt great.

He finished by saying what a classy mare she was and that she’d ‘walk a newcomers tomorrow’ so I was very chuffed with my girlie! She was foot prefect all day and didn’t even breath on a single pole, and hasn’t had a fence down in 5 weeks. I’m always my own worst critic so it’s nice to be told positive things and whilst I didn’t really feel like I 'learnt' anything (mainly due to the fact I was one of three in the group), it was a great confidence boost and I thought William was an excellent trainer and very encouraging, so I’d recommend him if anyone in Sussex is looking for help.

Thanks for reading!

Ah but surely you did learn something if you got THE canter?! And did her 1st proper grid etc? Sounds great. Seems like ages since I've read a post of yours, have you not been out much lately?

That is great news, where did Will base the clinic? I bought my mum from him, would have been interesting to take her back and see if he 1 recognised and 2 was impressed?

Well done.....so now you just need to get out there and start competing

Hi t-e, Sorry I meant to write ‘learnt something new’! I knew what I should have been doing – it’s just doing it! I’ve found it strange going from strong, fizzy, sharp horses to Chloe, who is really a darling and just does what you say. I now have to push on to a fence, something I have never had to do (usually get towed!) which is why the canter was suffering as a result, I think instead of having a good ‘4 yard’ canter, I was on more of a 3&1/2 purely because I was not using my legs enough and also I was letting it drop around corners, the result was distances not coming nicely for a fence. It’s having the confidence to push on really, something I have always had to avoid! Saying that when I tried her out we had to move the reins down to the last ring on a dutch gag and on Saturday she did it all in a loose ring snaffle so we must be on the right track.

I don’t have a school at home and it’s my own yard so I have no-one to shout at me or reinforce my ideas of what’s happening, so it was great to hear that we are doing OK on our own.

I only bought Chloe 3 weeks ago and have been a bit in-between horses for a while TBH. I got fed up with loaning other peoples problems and after hearing my jumping mare would not jump again a couple of months ago, I decided to treat myself and buy a horse I really want = Chloe, who so far has been a sweetheart!

Thanks for asking, I am loving your chestnut boy BTW!

You bought your mum from him?! LOL!

It was based at Pebsham Riding Centre, nr Bexhill, which has just built a brand new 30 x 60m outdoor arena which is reallllly smart - I was quite impressed! Plus it was great as only 30mins for me to go. They are trying to set up another one and are going to give me a ring to let me know when it is, I can PM you if you like? Very reasonable cost too, and only 3 in a group

Oh! See I thought you must be talking about the mare in your sig - quite a solid lady, I didn't know her name so just assumed it was her! Didn't realise you had a new one! Well best of luck with her.

Nope that's one of the horses I had on loan, yes she was huge and pulled like a tank! Did very well for her size, but BSJA was too much for her, she did well upto about 1m though, not bad for a 750kg horse!

Thankies for the luck, I don't seem to get much so hopefully it's my turn now:)

If you could let me know when next clinic is that is great. I would rather it was more Surrey/ Sussex border though admiteedly. Where is will based now?

Well he is about to move, but not sure where to yet!, he's currently looking for a new base but said it will be within the localish area, so still in Sussex I guess.

At the moment he is near Ashdown Forest, Maresfield.

I'll drop you a PM when i hear

I got my horse when he was based in rotherfield - nice little yard. If you could PM when he moves that is great

I'm based at that yard in Rotherfield but I'm not in contact with Will now - I'll let you know if and when I hear more though.

Which horse did you buy out of interest?

I bought Lottie 15.3hh bay mare, late starter. If you have any info on my PM me. I beleive she was a cheap price due to her quirkiness

The centre at Pebsham does regular clinics and they are hoping to have Will again. So far they’ve had Sam Champney-Warrener, John Smart, Brian Lear and others in the last few months. They’ve also got a dressage one in 2 weeks with Mary-Anne Horne who is supposed to be excellent, I don’t do dressage but even I’m tempted!
