one of mine is classed as a whistler even though shes never been scoped. I also think she is a roarer.
Ive never had any problems with her and her noise isnt that bad. She doesnt seem to have any problems. My vet has no concerns over her and has said he had a horse that was 100 times worse and evented to advance level. if it gets worse I would have her scope.

Mine's a roarer. I've had him for 10 years (since he was 5) and it's never caused a problem, I don't even notice the sound anymore. The fitter he is, the better he is.

Mine's a roarer - sounds like a steamengine at times.
He developed COPD when stabled inner-city. However, once moved back to the countryside and 'no dust' regime applied COPD disappeared.
Other than that - no problems re performance. He has done almost everything from eventing with a previous owner to long distances with me ...

its nice to see im not the only one! - sorry if you see this twice as also posted in Veterinary ~ i dont know what to do

i just brought a young horse to SJ she passed a full vetting but when worked her at home she made a noise in canter - roaring/ whistling.

Had her scoped and she has very slight paralysis on left side. dont know weather to take her back or not as shes a really nice mare.

If you had a full vetting then your vet should have picked the noise up, If you really like this horse and not going to ask for serious hard work, eventing, racing, etc then I would keep him but defo take it up with the vet!
Good luck

Hi HLB!

Yes, I have a horse with V bad wind
frown.gif

We took him up to a really nice guy who does work for international Champs and he had a good look at him...

He Lunged him in round pen at walk, trot and Canter to have a listen and then "Scoped" him (Camera dwn throat etc etc) to see what he looked like.

Apparently, he has the worst wind he had seen. I dont know how much you know about wind, but 99% of the time Horses with bad wind have one (Usually left) larynx completely paralysed, which is where you hear the noise as the air tries to squeze down the other side.
However, my horse has both sides partially paralysed ASWEL as a collapsing throat, which means even if he gets the hob-day op, he still will have problems breathing as ther is no operation for a collapsing throat. Its sad really, he cant keep up with his friends in the field and i will never be able to event him, which is what I want do.

I can still canter about and jump as long as i keep an eye on him, he loves his jumping, but he gets himself so excited that he cant breathe and stars to panic

its such a shame, it is heart breaking really.

A hob-day or tie-back operation should put a horse with a "normal" wind prob back on track...I know a girl who had her horse hob-dayed and went on to two olympics! lol

the mare isnt that bad to warrent the operation as she has a lazy larynx, it moves but slowly - vet said it may get better with fittness.

i am very dissapointed as i payed for the full works to be done in the vetting and then this happens!!! i now question the practise they use.

i have contacted them but no reply so i may have to keep her anyway - which really isnt bad as i really like her im just P***ed about the amount i have paid to have a horse with this problem!! very angry

it is nice to know though; that other have horses like this i know im not alone.

i have delt with this in my cob but he only got it from catheters(sp) because of stranges a few years ago so the niose is from scar tissue as oppossed to larynx, mind you he sound bad, can hear him a mile away, but as i said its not larynx so totally different.

i completely understand where you are coming from. I had mine vetted for insurance purposes only. one vet said he wouldnt go near my girl because of her noise and said she should be a field ornament - he also made comments about a little scab on her dock and she had some hair line cracks on her hooves - i can understand being careful but he was OTT.
i complained and got another vet. he said although she had a slight noise he would happily pass her for eventing etc up to advanced level.
i would certainly be querying what went on at the vetting and personally i would badger the first vet to resolve this issue for you.

The vet suspects that my boy displaces his soft palate, which results in him making the most horrible wheezing noises when we are walking, until he swallows and puts it back in place.

He only ever does it when he is walking and quite chilled out and never seems affected by it in any way (ears always forward etc).

Vet says that he could be sent to a big vet centre to go on a treadmill and get scoped, but he prob wouldn't show the symptom as he would be more up tight and it doesn't really seem worth it at 18, with arthritic joints.

Hi there

I got my youngster Sept 2007 and the more hard work we started to do the more I realised he's what I would say thick in his breathing. When he exerts himself, especially if he's excited at the same time, he starts to get very wheezy and struggles to breath. A bit like an asthmatic. I'm hoping it gets better as his fitness improves. I bought him to event and he's wonderful in every way so i'm trying not to worry about it. It's a wee shame for him though.
