Hi there. I bought a horse 2-3 weeks ago. I knew he was a wind sucker when I'd bought him. He can't get to any of the wooden fences around the field so I thought he's be ok, but yesterday I noticed him doing it on one of my mates backs!! She didn't seem to b in pain or anything as she was letting him do it on her. I was wondering if there is a supplement out there that may be able to help him with the wind sucking as obv isn't ideal him doing it on my mates back!!

Any info would b greatly received,

Thanks xx

Cribbing and windsucking is often a sign of ulcers, yours sounds extremely established if he is doing it on another horse so it would be worth investigating but your insurance will not cover you as it is a pre-existing condition, treatment with gastrogard is very expensive so it would probably be worth getting him on an ulcer friendly diet first to see if that helps and give him a decent ulcer supplement, that will probably not heal the ulcers but may give you an indication of what is going on, scoping will give you a definitive answer and costs around £300, probably worthwhile as supplements all add up and may not really help.

I would probably give him a post to use, he will continue anyway and better he uses a post than your other horse or his own leg and starts to do other damage in the process, if it is due to ulcers he may stop once he gets relief from the pain, if it is just habit there will be little you can do to stop him.

I echo Be Positives thoughts. Give him a 'cribbing station' and then please do take the possibility of ulcers seriously. I've known a few horses who have dramatically reduced or pretty much stopped cribbing after being treated with gastro guard.
