My mare has a squishy swelling above her fetlock on her right hind leg and in her left hind leg a little, it isnt noticeable but you can feel it. She isn't lame, in pain or acting any different to normal (well she's in season ATM so a bit grumpy like normal :) ).

I haven't had the vet out to check and I don't definitely know that it is windgall, but from what I've researched it seems as if they are.

I've read all sorts of different things about them and was wondering if anybody had experienced windgall and if they did anything about it?

Thanks :D

Sounds very much like a windgall. My old mare had these on all four legs. Seemed to develop as she got older and i know she had jumped on hard ground a lot(which is a contributing factor). Was also a heavier built mare which i think made her more predisposed to it. Tried various things over the years as they used to drive me nuts - magnetic boots, cold treatment, and various supplements, although nothing seemed to help. Other than being cosmetic windgalls do not appear to cause any difficulties for a horse.

My mare is rising 11 (was backed when she was 7) and is a dainty sports horse. Before I had her she was mainly jumped and did XC... I've read that they can be caused by hard working? Did you ride your mare with the windgalls? I use brushing boots and was wondering if this would make them worse? Sorry for all the questions never really experienced anything like them before :)

Yes my mare had done a lot of jumping and a lot of that was on grass in the summer on hard ground. I continued to ride/compete her as normal and it never caused any soundness issues although she was fed joint supplements and a herbal supplement called 'windgall' by global herbs. Shouldnt think boots would make any difference. I used to use sports boots(premier equine) which gave a bit more support to the fetlock area. I pretty much tried most things available but they really are nothing more than unsightly ! My mare had a whopper on a front leg!

Brilliant.. thank you a lot :) I'll take supplements into consideration if they get worse/don't seem to improve in the next couple of weeks.

Sounds like it could be. But I've always gone for the point of view if i'm not sure what or why somethings wrong, or how to treat it, I get a vet. Good theory however experienced you are.

As my mare isn't showing any pain or differences in her attitude (shes very sensitive) I haven't got the vet out. As soon as she shows some difference I'll call them straight away to get them to check... Brilliant advice though littlelegs!

My mare is shod on both front and hind. I'm keeping an eye on them until the end of the week and if they don't go then I will be calling the vet. Thanks for the information! Very useful.
