Hi my 9 year old irish tb mare that Iv had for 3 weeks now as windgalls I think on her hind legs she as small pockets of fluid on both hinds i cant feel any heat in them and shes ok with me touching them BUT she is lame Iv given her bute tonight and put comfrey paste on and she as had a few hours turn out alone in the small paddock is there anything else I can do? and should I be concerned that she is lame ? as Iv googled windgalls and it seems they dont usually cause lameness,,,, not had tb for long time used to hardy natives so need some help here please

I have a mare with windgalls in both hind legs, and she has no lameness. From what the vet has told me if there is no heat in the area, it is purely cosmetic. What is causing your mares lameness is probably not the windgalls if there is no heat.

However, if the lameness arrived at the same time as the windgalls then mabey the windgalls are another symptom to whatever caused the lameness.

Some horses are predisposed to windgalls, others acquire them by an injury, or by being worked too hard too young. It sounds to me that your horses windgalls may be caused by whatever caused the lameness in your horse.

Good luck with your mare! I hope its nothing serious

From my experience the best remedy is rest!! My mare developed a massive windgall (and bowed tendons) at the age of 9 one hunting season as I was hunting her twice a week. She was turned out as usual all summer and returned to hunting just once a week, over 10yr later neither problem has returned. Good luck and hope your horse comes sound :)
