Two people have asked me to look at ponys today as both were lame. Both horses have same swellings. On both fores. A swelling, warm to touch just above fetlock joint either side and behind. Both horses are lame and very reluctant to trot.

One horse has been like this for a week and a half and vet coming out Tues, the other pulled up like it at a show. Could this be windgalls? I typically thought they appeared mainly on the hind fetlocks and have never seen them on fores. I am not a very good lame person in the sense I can say yes that horse is lame and that is as far as I can go.

Sounds like something more than windgalls, possibly tendon injury. I would cold hose and call the vet sharpish. Maybe phone vet and they may advise to give some bute if necessary til they can get there.

windgalls can cause slight lameness but it isnt usually that bad. they are like fluidy lumps around the fetlocks. usually from concusion as its the synoval fluid.

My horse has huge windgalls on both front feet.
They are quite old, I've had her 2 years and she already had them when I got her
But what you say doesnt add up to windgalls for me :/
I would suggest tendon sheath maybe

Oh man. Well vet is out for one of the mares and I know that the other owner has said that if she doesnt improve in 3 or so days they are calling the vet as well. I am staying out of that the horse isnt mine only posting for my curiousity really. All I have said is that I agree the horse is lame and strange how both horses have the same swelling. Thank you for the replies.

Windgalls don't cause to much trouble normally cosmetic.
The ground is very hard where I am and I put put money on it being a tenton or ligament injury. How far up does the swelling go? Cold hose, bandage up and get vet out stright away. If it is tendon or ligaments they will be on box rest.
Hard to tell without feeling it myself but sounds like it. Seen loads in racing and will only get worse if left.

Lots of horses have windgalls and they rarely cause lameness, so I suspect that these horses have more than just windgalls.

If I remember righty, a windgall is swelling of the tendon sheath.
