Would you buy a horse with either of the faults above? How could you manage them and what damage do they do to the horse?

Seen a few horses for sale and a couple have the above faults.

Thank you

Jo

windsucking; Personally it depends on the severity if it is mild and the horse is REALLY what I am looking for then I would possibly buy it and buy a miracle collar and weave grill. If however it is a serious windsucker it can cause medical probs such as stomach ulcers which can lead to colic etc and would probably steer clear.

I think there is an operation available to remove some skin / muscle from the neck to stop the horse from flexing enough to windsuck but im not sure if it is effective or not.

weaving; TBH I'm not too bothered by this as long as it isn't frantic, an anti weave grill could sort it aswell as plenty of stable toys etc.

Yes I would buy a horse that wind sucked or cribbed, the collars are good and stop them doing it, most horses I know only do it in the stable so I would try and have thme out as much as poss, some do it on fences in the field though but it wouldnt put me off if it was the right horse.

seems to me there are lots of good horses without vices to choose from, but it is personal choice after all

depends on what you want to do with it but IMHO any decent horse that is good at something always comes with a "vice", god I smoke! - maybe someone won't buy me!!

Seriously tho, as long as your YO if you have to go on livery - doesnt mind, I wouldnt let it put me off.

Some of the best jumpers I know have awful habits, but they know their job in the ring!

my horse weaves. it doesn't bother me. it's bothered the odd yard owner, but i just keep him out as much as possible. he's never suffered any health problems from weaving.

A friend bought a horse that wind sucked many years ago. She still has him, he still windsucks & she wouldn't change him fo the world. He has competed at county level Working Hunter & he has 98 British Dressage Points. He's 20 now, doesn't do much now but enjoys a hack & goes occasionally to local shows for veteran classes.

If a horse jumps the size tracks that you want to do or competes at the level of dressage you want to do does it really matter that much what he does in his own time?

depending how severe it was i may consider it...better if i could have them out 24/7, if they were only vices in the stable! id check with YO if your at a yard, because alot of YO's wont accept horses with vices...

Nothing wrong with a bit of weaving - Finni just has more rhthym than the other horses

Seriously though, couldn't abide a WS but weaving - no probs

Would be very wary of a windsucker and, unless the horse was well proven competitively, wouldn't touch a WS/cribber

Weaving, provided only mild and this was reflected in purchase price I would consider.

You said in your previous post that you were looking for something to sell on - in which case I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole

I have a windsucker/crib biter. I don't do anything to stop him windsucking as I believe it would cause him pain or distress, but he does have a generous high fibre diet and after dinner mints (rennies). It wouldn't put me off if he did what I want - which this one does.

Equally I wouldn't be too worried about a weaver if everything else was right

However there are thousands of horses out there...I came by mine because nobody else really wanted them for various reasons and maybe because other buyers could not see past the vices, so I understand that there is a limited market for these horses.
