With a new horse this winter I am wondering what you use on your horses?
I want to make sure before winter that we have the right rugs for Radders.
He will be fully clipped and he is full TB.

Thanks

TBH I think it's best for stable to have a lightweight rug, and a cotton sheet. You can then use an old duvet or blankets between layers, and just wash the cotton sheet once a week.

For turnout, a lightweight, mw and hw is all you really need.

i have a light and medium weight, fleeces and an under duvet rug thing. i find with TB's you need to rug them up well therefore i use a combination of these dependednt on the chill factor. TBH for stable rugs i buy robinsons. they are cheap and quite good value for money.

iv just bought the mark todd underrug, 250g i think, so i can then layer it to create the rug i want, plus its alot cheeper than buying say a HW rambo stable rug

A good fleece full neck will work well under a stable rug and for a slender tb who will possibly feel the cold a bit, layering may be better, depends how hardy your tb is
Robinsons do an excellent range of rugs, they are worth a look imo

I hate Rhinegold turnout rugs, but the full neck stable rug I got from them ages ago is brilliant. Its the "Kentucky" - they're on Ebay. Bought it 4 years ago and it still looks brand new (although I dont use it every night by any means as mine arent stabled but do use it if they are or all the time for standing about at winter events).

Really cosy and fits perfectly (especially on my woosy clipped TB). Otherwise I also have a FAL Goliath stable rug which Ive had for about 10 years! Its still looking good and is very nice but its a standard neck (prefer combo) and also I find FAL rugs are a bit too generous, so it swamps my TB.

Out of all the rugs my horse has had the best stable rug has been a shires! I was very surprised as have always just assumed it was a 'cheap' make. I cannot remember what model it was but it was a super heavy weigh with built in neck and the quality of it was amazing and it kept my wimpy cob nice and toasty all winter and was only about £60!!

one of the best rugs i have bought for my TB have been the cheapy ones

I bought a stable one from robinsons for £14 and it fits perfect despite him being so narrow and is really warm even though its only supposed to be 200g
didnt like their TO's though as they were a bad fit and rubbed all my lads shoulder
as others have said i put 2 layers or 3 when really cold to have more insulation to keep him warm. Im quite lucky as my stable is in a barn type thing so it really is like theyre own house so it doesnt et as cold.

the best TO is a tesco one! that i bought in the 75% off so i was only £12, again fits perfect and still had holes left at the front to go tighter(that is a first with any of my rugs!)
has a nice warm neck cover and is really toasty. Is well made and strong and only £12!
Then my friend bought me one when she went to clitheroe auction. I think the make is Euro-plus its 400g with half neck for £35

hehe can you tell i like my bargins!?!

We use the silver lined FAL dual purpose rugs with detachable neck covers. They get taken off when neddies come in at night in winter, horses are groomed and then they are replaced. Or if it is really cold we just fold the front back, groom the front, replace it and then do the same with the back.

They are also re-sited again in the morning.
