I've had my horse on Winergy Calm Energy for a while now, it really suits her and I have to be a bit careful about protein content as she tied up a couple of years ago.
Typically, I get a call from my feed supplier saying that they've now discontinued it - I'm guessing because they want to push Equilibrium (that's what they recommended as a replacement). However, although I've tried Equilibrium, I think it's vastly overpriced compared to Calm Energy/just grass/oil and the amount you have to feed means I'm going to be spending nearly twice as much if I use it.
Anyone got an ideas for a low protein, high fibre feed that suits a horse that is quite spooky at the best of times? She's 16.2, medium build and quite a good doer. Ridden under normal circs about 4-5 times a week.

PS I'm not really into the Simple Systems, I'm sure it's good but just want an everyday mix. Thanks

If your horse has tied up, you really sdon't want to be feeding a cereal based feed due to the sugar it produces. Protein is irrelevant in these cases it provides building blocks for muscle and top line but does not cause tying up. Anything with a starch content of over 15-18% needs to be carefully avoided.

You need something based on fibre and oil, why not call Spillers as they are under the same company as Winergy and can offer you a more appropriate alternative.

I feed the Low one at way less than recommended rate, and top up with a reduced amount of Vit/Min Supplement.

I have one that reacts badly to high energy/protein feeds, she is very chilled on this regime.

I add beet as well.

For tying up you really want to be more concerned about starch than protein, the protein content isn't the issue with tying up - that's a common myth, if I were you I'd give the feed companies a call, if you really don't like the Winergy Equilibrium then what about something like Spillers Response Slow Release energy cubes or just High Fibre cubes depending on how much energy you need - both have low starch levels. I definitely wouldn't be feeding a mix to a horse that is prone to tying up. The feed companies will be able to advise you - you could always give a few of them a call and compare!

Winergy Equilibrium Low is only 3.5% starch, no cereal visible to the naked eye either, but appreciate it may not mean it is cereal free.

1 - 1.5kg a day of that won't oversupply starch to my mind.

Edited, Spillers Slow Release Cubes are 12% starch according to website.

At £10 for a 15kg bag, I can't see the Equilibrium being good value for money, especially when the feed rate is 2-4kg a day to benefit from all the added extras (and if you don't feed rec amounts, you have to supplement anyway) I have tried it and did find it expensive. At 3kg a day, that's a rather astonishing £60 a month! Ouch!

Think I meant sugar, not protein (must have amnesia - the bout of azoturia was quite a while ago but I looked into it thoroughly then) and the calm energy, although a mix, was perfectly suitable for horses prone to this condition as it's high fibre and low energy.

Have spoken to Allen and Page and they've recommended Ride and Relax. Anyone else use it?

Thankies

The Calm Energy isnt that the cereal Based Winergy product?? I have a horse that suffers from EPSM i did have him on Equilibrium Low but it was to expensive.

I now feed Dengie Alfa Oil with Topspec coolcondition cubes & topspec balancer which lasts for ages along with the Alfa oil & a little Speedibeet. Excellent diet for horses prone to tying up.

According to Spillers website the Winergy Range still available.

There is no cereal 'visible' in the Low EQUILIBRIUM, as opposed to the Calm which is/was a mix.

Mine has 1kg a day plus small amount of Surelimb, which means a bag lasts her 2 weeks.

Suits her and if you are looking at low starch and sugar worth considering. Never fed any of the Equilibriums at anywhere near full rate. Spillers website for Winergy has a table showing the starch and sugar levels, no idea if A and P has the same but starch is listed for each product.

Winergy low Energy is cereal free, and you can often feed smaller amounts of these products than recommended, without using a balancer. I feed less than the recommended ration without a balancer over the spring and summer and she still looks and feels fabulous on it. I found their careline quite helpful

i feed winergy equllibrium (sp) growth (young horse) i add a good value chaff and msm to mine, i dont feed at the recommended rates as i feel unless you can feed your horse 6 times a day is too much to feed in two or three feeds, I feed a quater of rec levels and msm i add some chaff to bulk it out and my horse is in good nic, healthy shiney coat, good feet fab temp! costs me about 30quid a month at the most for all of his feed!!

Don't know about the growth one but the Equilibrium I used already had plenty of chaff added to it. If I'd added any more it would have been pretty much just a bucket of chaff

Perhaps it's changed, it was a while ago...

The Equilibrium Growth has a fair bit of Alfa in it, no need to add ordinary chaff to that either.

Was that the Calm Energy one, in a Yellow bag I think?

i feed very little of it and is cheaper for me to add chaff to it, like i said as a cheaper bulking agent! My horse is fab on it!

No, the Equilibrium came in a blue bag. Calm Energy (in the yellow bag) is just a mix with no obvious added chaff.

See, that's just my point about the Equilibrium being expensive. If it's supposed to be a complete feed, then you shouldn't need to add a chaff as it's already included. However, if you don't feed at the recommended rate, then your horse isn't getting the full complement of added mins and vits, so you should, by all rights, add a supplement.

I'm going to give the Ride & Relax a go. It's a mix, but, despite what's been said above about azoturia and mixes, I've been on to the feed line and it's a product which is suitable for horses prone to tying up. We can but see...

Indeed you can, and (as I said earlier) I do feed a small amount of V/M supplement with it,but no chaff just a little beet. Mine would be overfaced with a huge feed, whether it was fibre based or not.

How much a day of the R and R do they say to feed? As opposed to what you will feed if not full amount.

I suggest you contact Winergy and ask them what the starch content of the Winergy Calm Energy is, then you can use it as a comparison with other feeds. For example, if they say the starch content is 10, then aim to feed something with the same starch content or lower. Once you have the starch content of the Calm Energy you can ask Allen & Page what the starch content is of the Ride & Relax to see if it is suitable.

You could also contact Dodson & Horrell, as although they don't publish starch content on their website, one of the other forum users rang their helpline and found they had several feeds lower in starch than the Winergy Equilibrium product she was using. Also worth contacting TopSpec as they have some good low starch feeds too.

I already posted that R and R is 15% starch, way higher than Winergy Low at 3.5%.

And unless OP is going to feed the full recommended amount of R and R, or any other feed, there will still be a need for a top up of vits and mins IMO.

But the OP isn't feeding Winergy Low, she is feeding Winergy Calm Energy which she says her horse does well on, so would make sense to to find out what the starch content of the Calm Energy is, in order to compare with other feeds.

My horse tied up over the recent icy spell and the Spillers website recommended Winergy Equilibrium condition - the pink packaging. This is designed for horses needing low starch and sugar, and contains high levels of fibre and oil. I've just started using it so can't comment yet. Anyone else trying it?
