Today was filled with ups and downs, as eventing quite often is. This was our first PN of the short season we have had so far.
To say I was nervous is an understatement, especailly after walking the XC and seeing how 'solid' the fences looked!
Went over to the dressage and Bren warmed up quite well, a little inattentive but thats quite normall for the spooky beast! The arena was 'undulating' to say the least and the test didn't feel particularly good, but his rythmn and balance wasn't bad considering, I thought it was a 36, my friend reconned 34. When we checked 28.1......OMG how excited was I, lots of jumping up and down and lots of carrots for the boy!!!
. Thats our best dressage at PN ever!!
Anyway, onto the SJ which was the 'down' of the day. He warmed up quite well but when we went into the ring he stuck his head up and became overly spooky (not sure what set him off as he's jumped at Blenheim on thurs really well and I thought that would've set us up nicely for Winkburn?). It was a rather 'workmanlike' effort on my part with the mission being to get between the flags, we had 3 down and 1 time pen, so as you can imagine I was a tad frustrated.
I tried to put it behind me but started to worry about the XC being so solid and big!! Anyway, trusted friend (and sports psyc) sorted me and we set off at a rather rapid pace, couple of spooks at the first few fences, bit of a smack on the bum from me and he was motoring!! Jumped everything really well and cleanly, quite a lot of vocal encouragement (more for my benefit than his!!) and we finished with 0.4 time pens so I was over the moon to have survived and Bren seemed to have enjoyed himself!
I think we finished about 14th overall which I'm chuffed with, lots of pro's in the section too.
A lovely, old fashioned horse trials event where I think they really made an effort to make sure everyone had a good day!
Well done if you've got this far!!
