Talk about doing things back to front - I should have posted this BEFORE buying but here goes.
I bought a Wintec elastic girth that claims to stretch a couple of inches to work with your horse and it also says it is chafeless as it stretches with the horse. I have now used it and realised that it makes my horse very sweaty under it - will this cause chafing and/or galls?
Has anyone got one and had any problems?

The saddle company I work for recommends the Wintec elastic girth because the elastic is very strong and is in the middle, so it stretches across the breastbone and not up the sides, all of which you know ...

However, I always tell my customers (very quietly) that I do not like synthetic girths at all, because they "draw" the flesh - in other words, they cause sweatiness and if used for long periods, the area where the girth has been will appear raised.

I prefer leather girths because you are putting a natural material against your horse - like against like as it were.

I've used one and although I prefer leather, I have always cleaned this particular girth after use, just to make sure that it dosn't have any sweat or dirt to cause any problems. She does seem to sweat alot under it, but because its always clean when I use it, I probably notice it more???

It does stretch and because she changes shape and size during the season, its been ideal and caused her no problems.

My horse came with a Wintec girth but I also found that it made him really sweaty. He now has a leather girth and seems much better in that!

I find the Wintec makes mine sweaty too. The only good thing about the mud/rain is changing the girth frequently, for a different brand etc, helps with any potential rubbs.

Thanks guys for your responses.
I will keep the girth clean and keep an eye out for any signs of chafing or soreness!
It will perhaps teach me a lesson about buying things on a whim whilst in a tack-shop. Although somehow I doubt it!

i have one, and have been using it instead of a leather girth. he seems much happier in it, although yes he does sweat. not got any sore patches atm, and he did sweat in the leather girth. if your horse works, even alittle bit, then he is bound to sweat, and i reckon that as long as you keep the girth clean, and the girth area clean then you can hope for the best

It makes mine sweaty in the summer but not at the moment (he is fully clipped though). I have no problems with it at all and my horse is very sensitive, almost everything rubs him.

My Wintec chafeless elastic girth also makes horse sweat a lot in girth area - to the point of dripping. No sores have ever arisen though. And now I use a prolite pad over the girth and the sweating is virtually non-existent.

Ooh thanks the replies - I shall stop worrying about whether I should have bought it or not now! I mean I know it wasn't very expensive - I was just a bit concerned that I had bought something without giving it any thought and just been taken in with all the lovely things in the tack shop!
