hi everyone ,just brought a gp wintec saddle with changable gullet its the same has the one i have allready got the new one fits fine and very cuffy in walk and trot but when i canter it lifts slighty at the back only brought it because old one is very worn and looks very tatty any idears please how i can stop it lifting

To be fair, just because your old one was ok does not mean you can replace like with like...if it is lifting at the back then something is wrong about the fit. Did you have someone out to re-assess things before buying the new one?

Wintecs do take a while to "settle" when they are new.... they reccomend you get them checked after about 4-6 weeks of use, since even if they fit perfectly initially, they can change slightly..... so depending how long you've been using it, it may not have settled yet, so you may need to give it some more time (unless its really causing a problem, in which case, get the saddler out!)....

I started off with a medium wide gullet in mine, then after about a month, changed it to a medium and after another month, I am now changing it to a medium narrow - each time it has fitted fine initially, but then after a few weeks of use, it settles and needs to be changed! I just have to keep checking it!

If in doubt, get it checked by a qualified saddler!!

But I also agree with pottamus - a well worn saddle will probably give a different fit to a brand new one, even if its the same make etc... so even if you put the same width gullet in, doesnt mean you will get the same fit....

with saddles with plastic trees they all come out the molding machine exactly the same, but all the saddles will be slightly differant in fit as the flocking will be hand set so no two saddles will ever be identical for fit, but as Darksecret says the flocking will take time to compress, and then may need to be adjusted however the usual reason a saddle lifts at the back is due to the gullet being to wide, and the saddle will rock, which will do damage to the horses back, try narrowing the gullet but dont rely on the Wintec gullet gauge as a guide as they are often wrong in my opinion, once the pommel is an inch lower than the cantle (does depend on the make of saddle) the saddle should not lift at the back, if it still does try a Wintec rear rizer to fill the gap.

hope that helps

Martin
