I know this is abit premature but summer is nearly over and I haven't yet heard any good or bad weather predictions for this winter.....anyone heard what it might b like? Cold/dry would b fab :-) cos we flood :-( !!!

well if the old wives tails are true about a heavy abundance of berries on the trees means we're in for a rough winter then we are in the poop:eek: trees round here are weighed down with sloes and berries:rolleyes:

It is one of those "you will just have to wait and see"
But.....the tree's have acorns like never before. Same for hawthorn, holly and elderberry.....previous two years we have had almost none of the above.
So I am HOPING for a relatively mild winter this year!

Well, so far it seems that we are in for another cold one. This being the general theme from most of the ' amateur' weather forecasters including Positive Weather solutions.

The likes of The Met office etc will say that it is far to early to predict the winter weather but the guys above have been right for the last couple of years. I really hate the wind and rain. Everything turns to mud and 7 months is too long to endure those kind of conditions. So bring on the cold and dry, that's what I say!

But on a lighter note. I seriously hope we have at least another couple of months of semi decent weather so my horses can stay out as long as possible before the early mornings and mucking out starts again.

My apple tree is drooping with apples and at work every fruit and nut tree is weighed down heavily with produce. I do believe this has happened because we had an abundance of sunshine early on in the year to help produce blossom and then fruit etc. That coupled with rain later to feed the trees has all contributed to a good season for fruit.

Maybe the old wives tale is true and that nature is providing a good crop to preserve through a hard winter. We shall see!

acorn production goes in cycles so you'll get bumper crops every five/ten years anyway-a late spring can also adversely affect the crop. we didnt have many acorns at all last year and it's a bit early to tell yet as we are always a few weeks behind up here. I was always told that a cold winter could be predicted by size/abundance of berries and rosehips which were all huge last autumn. this year, we have alot of berries and early rosehips so we might be in for another. I hope it's not as bad or as early though!

The farmers u here are all saying its going to be bad. However I dont know how they know! We have a lot of berries on the trees. I would happily have snow on the ground for the whole winter would prefer that than it being really wet. Saves the fields and the horses are happier!

Have been told by the farmers in the deep country that we are in store for a winter much like last year, and in some cases worse :(
Not looking forward to it at all, the old farmers are usually right about the weather and they are all preparing for early snow/ice :(

Joe Bastardi predicted last winters cold snap well in advance and after studying the effects of volcanic activity on the weather patterns he has said that we are in for very cold winters for the next five years!

I also think it will be a hard winter. We have had snow every year for the last few years and do not have seasons anymore! We had our summer in April.

I've heard a few of the amateurs predicting another cold one, this being the worst yet. Lots of snow apparently

This time last year we had a glut of rowan berries, apples, and the elders and the blackberries were loading the trees and bushes down, and we had a lot of snow. The berries are possibly more abundant this year  sp we are expecting another bad one, just hope it is not as early as last year!

I think it'll be bad unfortunately :( Something tells me there'll be more snow - so looks like I won't be getting down to the yard much this winter :(
There've been lots of blackberries around where I live, like LOADS, since the beginning of August. Conkers have also been falling, as well as acorns. Seriously hoping the old wives tales aren't true! xx

Judging by the berries it's going to be a cold one. And all our horses have done their late summer moult already. But, like everyone else says, don't mind the snow and the cold - just please not a winter of endless Somerset mud.

I am another hoping for cold and dry. Don't mind snow, bring it on, long as the mud stays at bay!! I have moved the horses to the family farm, so someone on hand to feed and check 24/7 if I can't get there... but a 2 mile walk isn't impossible is it??
Do quad bikes go in snow??

Same here near Edinburgh. The trees/shrubs are heavily laden with berries, and my native pony is well into growing her winter woollies. She will be living out and she has a full wardrobe of rugs incase it's a very wet winter and she needs them. Cold and dry ? She won't need rugs...but if the rain/wind is unrelenting, I'd rather she didn't have to struggle with being permanently soaked to the skin. The yard is less than 2 miles from home, so easy to get to in the worst of weather.

If it is going to be a hard one at least can we have a gentle introduction and not so early, not like last year when we suddenly hit - temps and stayed there :(

Its all the winter shows at my yard that get cancelled when its freezing that I miss. I've missed out on all the summer ones cos of my surgery (the same last year too):(

The amount of fruit/berries on trees is all to do with the weather in the spring, gales frosts etc & NOTHING to do with the future ! Weather cycles are set by a much larger picture than that. What I would say is there seems to have been a shift in recent years towards spring/summer being a month early & autumn/winter following suit & coming a month early. So the seasons are no longer or shorter, just at a different time.

Polldark - you are certainly right about seasons coming early!
I do get the feeling though that its going to be bad.
Dads famous last words last year were "oh we don't need to get the grit out, its not going to snow.." 6 weeks later the snow is still here...
I live in the *rsehole of nowhere, we have a 4wd but there is only so much they can do! Mum is batch cooking already, just incase we get stranded :D (Never going to happen, the pub is 1/4 mile walk :D)

hmmm so the general opinion is it's going to be a toughie, i don't mind as long as it's not too wet, can cope with the cold although last year was a bit extreme, having to use hubby's axe on the ice in the water barrel was a new experience:eek::D

Well, I'm praying for rain! I loathe the snow and ice, we run a big feed delivery round over Dartmoor, and it's so difficult to keep it all going. So I'm rooting for mild and wet, so long as it only rains at night please! Oh, and no wind, except when I need the fields drying back out.
