Hi, some of you may of seen my last post that I have become very allergic to my horse, I come up in hives and cant breath etc.
Any way went to the docs who have given me two inhalers and a nose spray, and has said that if they dont work il have to think about selling him, as im close to having an anaphylactic shock when i groom him :(.

Any way, he has a lot of dander (scurff) which is what im allergic to, I only got around to bathing him once this summer, he's always been shown and bathed very reguarly before.
Do you think its cruel if we bath him with some warm water, all over, and then rug him up on a mild day, if we have one soon?

Or the other option is to fully clip him, but he only gets ridden for about 4 days in a row and then has 5 days off in a row, due to my work, and when he does it's not hard work.

That's a good idea, although it is expensive. I have him at home and I cant really rely on anyone else to groom him and tack him up for me, I tried just ridinghim the other day without grooming him first, and I was already bad by the time I got on him :(

I have started using a product called Total Bodywash by a company called Chestfields, it is all chemical and fragrance free and it has really helped keep my two greys clean over the summer, their coats/skin have also improved and is less 'scurfy', it also got rid of some grease bumps under the saddle on one of them. I am still using it now but mine are clipped, not sure how it would work on an unclipped winter coat tbh but it is so quick and easy I love it, you literally wet the horse, spray it on, rub it in and rinse it off :)

If it was me
(a)I would hope for a dry day and bath him! use warm water and rug and walk him afterwards.
(b) clip him now!
Have you tried a mask when around him? maybe a good quailty one from a diy shop, if you were nearer I would offer to come and give him a good groom in the mean time, but sadly too far away!

I think this is probably the best option for you and if you rug him up well he won't mind having a full clip. Also, you can then bathe him regularly, even if it's a bit chilly, and get him dried off quickly. You will need to clip him regularly (every few weeks) to stop his coat growing though.

I know what anaphylactic shock is like and you really don't want to risk this (I have a nut allergy).

Thanks for the offer.
I asked the doc about using a mask, but he said they only work for 20 mins as after that they get moist from your breath and then trap the particles in and make it worse! but I still may use it for grooming before I ride.
Im glad im not on a livery yard cos it would be a bit embarrasing! lol

Ive got some days off next week so fingers crossed for a very mild day, I think me and hubby are going to bath him with the warm water. Il do his head with a damp towel. Poor horse.

OK - it is expensive but I would save like mad rather than lose my horse.

Alternatively get a professional to clip him top to toe and that should cut down on the dander and scurf.
