Do you mean the JAS series?
Personally I don't like them. They always try and cram far too many fences into a tiny space and if you have a young green horse that's not that helpful!! I would rather go indoor SJ and then XC schooling once or twice in the spring before the season starts. But that's just my opinion; evidently not widely shared as they're always very popular!!
Wouldn't know - don't have any of these anywhere even remotely near me! Does irritate me when these sorts of series say "nationwide" when they so aren't!
i did one years ago. it was all about speed, and was blowing some young horses' minds. everything came up very fast, it was question question question, with only 3 or 4 strides between, which i thought was a bit much. even my good mare, a xc machine, got very rattled by it. i agree with donadea tbh.
Yep agree! I did them in the first 2 years, and managed a 2nd on my mums horse, but not good for a youngster and really not very fair when its usually the same folks who win all the time!
I have to come to the rescue of JAS! Whoever said it was designed for youngsters? Indeed, the Grasshopers series run by BE at a similar time would be much more suitable for young horses. (This doesn't mean that you shouldnt do it one - the fences are up to 10cm smaller than usual - eg the intermediate is max 1.15.)
Instead, JAS is designed to brush off some winter cobwebs! The purpose of having so many fences is to get your eye in, and it can also help with a horses fitness. Chance to test brakes before it really matters, and ride a few narrow fences in a competiton atmosphere. The chances are you aren't going to have a straight approach to a pimple in an event, and JAS emulates this.
I would deffo go for it, you get really helpful feedback, and its lighthearted, friendly and social with everyone seeing each other for the first time after a longggggggggg winter!!
I haven't done JAS but would agree with the above comment that they're not really aimed at youngsters I didn't think - more as a way to get out and have a practise session before the season starts. I would take my older horse to one (and probably will next year) but not my littl'un.
I have however done the Grasshoppers and it was brilliant. The courses were in fact a bit easy if anything but as she'd been off with injury for a couple of years that suited me fine. Its just SJ but you get help with your warm up and then on your round you get judged and feedback. Then you get another go and get judged again. Your total score of the 2 rounds is added up. I suppose it depends to some extent on the trainer you get but the one I had was brilliant and I found the whole thing fun and helpful
I've done a couple and really enjoyed them, it does take some control to get round the course and aim at the right fence! Definitely fun for the more experienced horse.

Exactly right! I was only mentioning the young horse thing in case you had one, as I had the one and only time I went to a JAS competition. If you have something a bit more experienced then why not give it a go!
I agree about the nationwide thing - we're in York and the nearest one (and also the furthest north) is Arena UK at Grantham
I agree I think it is good. But do agree the same people win all the time regardless of how the horse goes.
I agree not great for youngsters but I did it on Spider this year and she was 4 at the time and coped fine, she had a few down but was great and she isnt the boldest!
