Hi I've only had my 12yr old mare since February 2014 and so this is our 1st winter together, just before Christmas I had to get the vet as she was coughing and struggling to breath, the vet came and scoped her and drew some pretty gunky white stuff off her lungs. Lab results confirmed bacterial infection. Antibiotics perscibed and she improved, only having a slight cough in the morning, she was scoped again a couple of weeks ago and some more white gunk came up, but the scope showed she was clearer the furher it went :) Lab results came back as clear, with no further infection, but more ab's perscibed to help kick the rest of the gunk. She now has a cough most mornings which can be anything from a couple of coughs to 10 -15 in a row :)and when ridden may cough a couple of times on the space of 1 20m circle then nothing for the rest of a 20 minute ride, however only walking at the moment, this morning she was particullary bad, which may be the speed she ate her breakfast and the cold snowy weather, she is in overnight, turned out during the day, fed good haylage, stabling, although indoors with 2 other horses, has good ventilation and she doesn't cough when I'm with her during the afternoon and evenings. I've also had her on ventilate, Naf respirator boost, steoids (which did not work) and now a herbal remedy which has had good results and reviews. On my vets instructions I'm in contact with him on a weekly basis to give him an update and so we can re-assess - to cut a long story short it would be lovely to hear from anyone who has had similar problems - or can share anything that worked :)

I have a horse with COPD, worse in the summer with the pollen and dust. I have found three products which work Clarity from Feedmark, Breathe Free from Dodson & Horrell, Easy Breathing from N.A.F. I also have to soak hay or use haylage. Work helps too, the fitter he is the less problems with his breathing. He has a very slow warm up so plenty of walking before trotting and very very short trots with lots of walk in between before longer trotting and finally some short canters. It can take 45min before he is ready to do any real work cantering or jumping. I have asthma and coughing hurts so I try to avoid making him cough when riding in case it is the same for horses.

Thank you, since putting this post on we have mananged to find a new yard with 24/7 turnout and an outdoor stable, as at the moment she is in a barn with 2 other horses, who are on shavings, but there is a stack of hay in the barn, which the premises owners dont want to move, - the people who own where we are dont have enough grazing for 24/7 t/o. Having spoken to my vet he is confident that I will have an improved horse when I can give her more turnout and fresh air - she is also better with work, but due to various things I've not been able to work her as much as I would like, roll on this weekend when we move to our new yard and she has loads of space and fresh air to hersefl :)

That is good news. My experience has been the same with outdoor stables being better than barn stables. Good luck at your new yard :)
