Dont know what im going to do this winter. Weve decided due to the risk im not going to clip mare. She was lethal dont know why my first winter lastyear with her.
The only problem is she competes at quite high dressage so needs to be clipped do I rug her so she doesnt grow such a big coat (I know it has something to do with sunlight hours so don't know if it will make a difference plusdon't like the idea! ) or do I get the vet out to sedate her? How long does sedative last?
Im stuck!

Have you tried domesedan?

This - it's great stuff, give it under the tongue like a wormer and she'll be out for plenty of time for even the most complicated clip. It's one of the two drugs the vet uses for IV sedation but you can give it yourself so no call out fees.

I use it for my pony when the dentist comes - great stuff

ooh no never heard of it? do you buy it of the vet?
my mare was aweful to clip i actually started and didnt finish and i do clipping for a buisness so its not like me to stop half way through! but it was a matter of getting kicked bitten trodden on! and more!

Personally i would just pay to have the vet come out and sedate. Its safer and less stress for both you and the horse.

Domesden - yep you get it from the vets.

With my pony it's better than the vets because it does absolutely the same job as IV but without the stress of him being handled by a man he doesn't know and no needles so far less risk and stress for both of us.

The last time the dentist came I gave him the whole tube (only a touch more than his weight said he needed) and he spend the next three hours with his head on the floor, willy out weeing, bottom lip out and eyes shut - if I'd have wanted to I could have performed major surgery!! I actually felt bad that he was out of it for so long - next time I'll under dose him a little!!

The vet has to have checked their heart quite recently for domesedan. Definitely worth using it tho.

That's right but as long as I've had his annual vaccination mine will just pop a tube in the post to me (or leave it at reception) Vacs are in Feb and dentist in July so don't know if they'd need to come out again if it was six months or more since vacs.
