As a relatively new owner coming into winter I am fast realising how much stuff I havn't got!!

What would you say are your essential items to help you get through winter in one piece (for you or horse)

A rug with a neck on - it's not much fun if you come to ride but your horse is covered in wet mud.

A rubber curry comb/ rubber grooming mitt - for getting any mud off and some rubber gloves for picking out dirty feet.

Def agree on a rug with a neck!!!! Gloves, rubber gloves, Wellies, good socks!!!! a brush with a handle if that makes sense - good to scrub off the mud when hosing legs. errrrr thats it for me really!!that and a lot of waterproofs, plenty of rugs/underrugs for pony, maybe a waterproof exercise sheet, coat, fluorescents etc. PHEW!!!

Snuggy hood, Rambo duo rug, turnout chaps = less grooming, less mud fever, more time riding! Need to devise a way to cover the rest of their legs and I'll be totally mud free!!

Headtorches (for doing the horses in the dark evenings)
Handwarmers
Hydrogen Peroxide (handy if they start getting thrusy feet)
Excersise sheet (handy but not essential!)
Plastic curry comb, sprung metal curry comb, dandy brush
Thick socks and wellies!
Plenty of rugs- often its handy to have a couple spares so you can let wet ones dry etc

Thats all I can think of for now!

7 day mud away is a oily kind of spray that you spray on the coat, stops mud from sticking too much x

Baby oil works too. Is this 7 day stuff good for that length of time then?

My essentials are hay, and lots of it. One rug per horse, and heated water troughs.

You:
Wellies, warm long boots, thick socks, wooly hat with dangly ear bits, gloves, rubber gloves, head lamp, thermals, waterproof coat + trousers, hi-viz
Horse:
Choice of rugs for the ned to change when wet, ripped, colder etc, Turnout chaps for horses legs protect from mud, exercise sheet, hi-viz + lights

i'll be a bit more specific, after years of not having quite the right kit...! i've finally learnt what the good stuff is, and am now not dreading winter...
for me:
Ariat Grasmeres - my feet were never ever warm before, no matter what i tried. don't even need thermal socks with these. worth every penny.
windproof and water-resistant breeches. currently loving my new Iridion Polartec Wind-Pro 3-season full-seat sticky bum ones! khazan saddlery can get hold of them. again, worth every penny.
blazewear waistcoat, has a rechargeable battery with panels that heat up. bliss.
sealskinz waterproof gloves. mega.
turtlefur ski neck-warmer!
woolly hat!
good waterproof but non-rustly jacket (for not getting dropped by youngsters!)
for horses:
Fal Pro Goliath rugs with full neck.
Mud Gard (sic) products.
that's it!

Horses - moved home from field and this year FINALLY we should have some sort of turnout that won't be muddy and possibly even a surface to ride on - bliss! They don't have stable rugs except as underrugs for when it's really chilly but they each have a spare and enough stable rugs or fleeces to cope with any temperature. Flynn is managing well with his new PE stable boots, they seem to be keeping his legs from filling which is good news. Sugarbeet - always a bin ready soaking. If I can get the automatic waterers fitted that will be a bonus. Have acquired large tipping trailer for mucking out into. That should make life a bit easier! Also now have Landrover to pull it. I've done years with an ordinary trailer and Skoda trying to pull two tonnes of muck up a muddy track and last year's misery of getting the combo stuck in the semifrozen mud and it taking my husband and I nearly two hours to dig it out will hopefully never be repeated.

Me - Ariat Grasmeres, discovered last year and just superb for warm feet. Caldene Paris goosedown jacket, reduced to a stupid price from ECW and so so snuggy and warm, pockets have fleecy linings for snuggy hands too. Rayburn - always warm whatever the weather and only a hundred feet from the first stable block. Keep kettle on it!

Hip flask - for those miserable moments (like getting the poo trailer stuck in the mud.) Hats

Snuggy hood - without a doubt the best thing I've ever bought. It's so satisfying when it's covered in mud and my grey horse is sparkly white underneath. Mine's actually a sweetitch one so I use it all year round but they sell turnout ones too.

Rambo fleece lined waterproof full chaps - couldn't survive winter without them.

I'd say 7 day mus away lasts for about 4 days if you give it a good covering, it is just like baby oil.

Its the only thing that got me through the livery turnout from hell, horse up to his belly in mud every day
