Hi All

As per the title, could anyone recommend a good riding/yard jacket for the winter that is waterproof and warm ? after last winter fed up of being cold and wet!!

Thank you if you can help!

Keep a lookout in Lidl for ski wear etc. I bought a snowboarding suit there a few years ago and it's fab for both riding and pottering about when it's freezing! It only cost about £35 and is brightly coloured too!

Anything other than one marketed for equestrians!!! Unfortunatley todays equestrian wear is absolute rubbish, all the ridiculous embroidery on it just leaks and the coats on sale are just cheap dross with a high equestrian price tag, made for fashion NOT function.

Get yourself to a shooting or skiing outlet to get something waterproof, good quality and value for your hard earned cash!!

Musto every time for me. Buy a size up from summer so you can wear a fleece underneath on really cold days. Wash with a non-biological powder to keep waterproof.

The lidl stuff in medium size (I'm 5'3" and about 9 stone) is brill - you can get a couple of jumpers on under the jacket and two pairs of leggings/pair of jodhpurs under the trousers. Their stuff can be really good quality. Ooh - they sometimes have an all in one waterproof motorcycle suit in there which my friend uses for clipping to keep all the hair out of her clothes!

Go Outdoors is great for waterproof stuff. They cater for walkers/campers at all levels.

Agree that the equestrian stuff is overpriced for the quality.

Go Outdoors can be very expensive, I reckon! I bought an ordinary anorak type thing there last winter which does the job, but it was about the cheapest one they had at nearly £30! Some were something like £300 - I couldn't believe you can pay so much for a waterproof jacket!

I was given a hi viz builders jacket by a friend and its great. Incredibly warm, has never leaked and you can see me a mile off! :D

£25 builders jacket (bomber jacket style) from Wickes doing its third year now and bloomin warm and windproof....damn its so sexy :) :)

Wore it all through the snow as well with just a wooly jumper underneath.

I have a 3 in 1 regatta coat that was £25 from ebay which is fab, a million time more waterproof than any of my horsey branded coats. It wouldn't be the warmest as it is rather thin but with plenty of layers underneath. I need seriously warm waterproof coats as I am stood teaching outside for up to 8 hours in a very exposed arena.
If you are wanting a long coat, drizabone!

Musto snug gets my vote, never cold always snugly and enough room to move. They also have kickass big collars so there are no hat/collar gaps :) Bought mine from one of the many places that'll sell them half price. It also goes in the washing machine :)

I’ve done 2 winters in my Barbour quilted jacket (it’s only thin) but it must be the materials its made out of although it's not water proof but I never seemed to get wet and I was out in all weathers, somehow it keeps me really toasty which you wouldn’t think to look at it, specially if you team it up with a real wool jumper , I have Le Chameau one and swear by it, good thing about this is you’re then not weighed down in heavy bulky winter jacket or loads of bulky layers, so you can move around freely while mucking out and riding, come to think of it I’ve no idea where it is, bet hubby has thrown it, every so often he gets sick of me wearing the same smell horse jacket and throws it away in summer when he thinks I won’t notice, I’ll kill him if he’s done the same to my Barbour!

It'll be in the car, or the tack room. Hope you find it.

ski wear has always worked for me. waterproof and warm and moveable. My tresspass trousers even have vents that I can unzip when you get hot. I just bought a tresspass onezie from ebay £30 including delivery now I need to invest in muckboots and I am sorted.

Also quick tip, ski gloves are amazing. I have had a pair for 8 years that are totally waterproof and soooo warm. I can smash the ice and pick it out with them on. I got them from TK maxx. They are a bit bulky for riding but great for around the yard.

I was warm and dry all last winter in an old fashioned wax Barbour jacket with a good fleece or jumper underneath, just hose it off and that's that! Reminds me I must get the waterproofing on it done again.:)
