How is everybody managing this winter?!?!

My horses have been turned out 24/7 for years prior to now, unfortunately due to house and yard move etc they’re in at night now.

I work full time ( emergency services - 12 hour shift work ), horses are a 5 min drive away. But i haven’t ridden in MONTHS.

On the days/nights im working I turn out / bring in and use a freelancer for mucking out but on my days off By the time I have mucked out I’m exhausted and fed up, i want to go home.

I feel I have no routine as definitely not as efficient as I used to be.

( I have one small cob and one TB type - stables, winter turnout paddock, ménage, walker and good hacking)

Someone help!!

I feel your pain. Horses at this time of year and working’ especially with your job is hard

Can you afford for the freelancer to muck out full hay nets etc on your days ff so you can ride?

Winter is crap but there’s no magical secret to it I’m afraid - you’ve just got to get your head down and crack on if you want to.

There is also nothing wrong with having a few months off riding to remove that pressure and guilt.

To make things a bit easier, I would:
- deep litter if poss to make mucking out a bit easier and bottom out once a week
- try do nets all at once, or better still, scrap nets altogether
- save poo picking for a day off or pay someone to do it
- depending on how flexible your yard is, can you leave out on odd nights to give yourself a break

Couple of months and it’ll be nicer again! Stay strong☺️
