Got my TB in march, and the only decent rugs he came with are a lightweight turnout, a show rug and a shires heavyweight- although it was mentioned that this might need reproofing. Used the shires heavyweight and seemed waterproof. TB living out over winter so need a good selection of rugs! Think I will get a medium weight turnout, which then if his H/W turns out not to be so waterproof, I can slip this underneath or use this with under rugs as well. So, my shopping list so far:

-Mediumweight turnout combo (to use in milder weather or under heavyweight rug in torrential rain!)
-Heavyweight under rug combo
-Mediumweight under rug
-A fleece/lycra neck rug or similar- to help with extra warmth and stop mane from being rubbed out!!

Will this be enough? I'm trying to soften the blow on parents bank account, so just need enough to make do with for this winter, can always splash out on a new heavyweight turnout next winter!

Thanks :)

that should be plenty although you possibly dont need both med and heavy weight under rugs, if your parents start thinking thats too much! but otherthan that i would think thats enough. Mine has light/med/heavyweight turnouts, light/med/heavyweight stable rug/underrugs, lycra vest, and about 20 fleeces/coolers that he has aquired over the years! But jus for living out that shouldbe everything you need, i would probably try to get one of the lycra neck rugs that only goes to ears not over the face as being out thats not ideal.x

I'd reccomend having a look on the equestrian clearance site its really good.
cant reccomend weatherbeeta rugs enough reasonable price, good fit and quality and never seem to slip.
I had a weatherbeeta orican last yr for my tb x and he wore it through all the snowy weather it has detatchable neck and was oh so cosy :) also had a kingshead l/w under rug, a cheap yellow, blue and red fleece from robinsons and a couple oher weatherbeetas :D best of luck x

Although I've nothing against weatherbeeta's and in fact think they are good value for money I don't find they fit thoroughbreds very well, and nearly always cause lots of rubs.

Ooh ok thanks, would never have known this! Think I'll get a shires mediumweight, as they seem to fit him well :) xx Thanks for the help everybody!

I use Weatherbeeta rugs for my fine built TB and she is fine and they are so economical and I am very happy with quality.

I have aquired over the years:

1 x medium turnout (with neck cover), in really cold weather I stick something under i.e. either her medium quilt stable rug or a fleece.
I also have a heavy Rambo which I got with her but it has some faults now I think you don't need to buy one especially if starting from scratch

For the stable I have a medium Quilt and a heavy weight Weatherbeeta (with neck) and a Fleece. You may also be ok to start just with a medium weight and an underrug (e.g. Fleece) if need be. You can always stock up at a later stage to spread the cost.

I also have one lightweight turnout for warmer days or colder summer days

This seems to be plenty to keep us going... x

I couldnt agree more- when i bought my horse money was tight to kit him out so i got weatherbeeta rugs and they rubbed his shoulders completely bald!
I sold them all and got Mark Todd which are fab and dont rub at all and Bucas but i think i'd go for the Mark Todd over Bucas as they are deeper and cheaper!

My pony however has perfect shoulders in her weatherbeetas so am not saying they are no good as a brand!!!
