Hi all
winter is defentaily on its way:rolleyes:, and i thinks its time to buy rugs!,my welsh mountain pony has some rugs but i want to treat her to 1 new one! and im not sure what one i should get! she lives out in day and in at night( applys during only winter) im not sure what rug i should get... spoke to someone at yard and she said turnout but not too thick, this is the first time i have had to buy a rug so thickness is all new to me!
so any suggestions welcome please,
or links to rugs
thank you

depends on whether you clip her and how much work she does.

As a guide: if she's out at day and in at night a turnout is perfectly acceptable for both. If she's hairy and you just want another layer then a rain sheet with no fill will do. You can always pop a fleece or cooler underneath if you need a little more. Or if she is a little cold a 200g turnout rug will do. If you're planning on a blanket clip or full clip then she'll need a heavy weight turnout of 300g+ in the very cold weather.

probably a 100g-200g rug then will do her just fine! Have a look on ebay some good bargins on there.

As a welsh i'm assuming she'll have broad shoulders, my tip would be to see if you can borrow some rugs to try on her to see what make fits her best. Some makes are rather narrow on the shoulder.

Not unless you want to spend more! Most are fine in a decent turnout. It helps turnouts dry off and will keep her snug rather than changing to a new cold rug! See what your yard manager says if they are doing rugs as some prefer to have stable rugs.

What rigs do you already have? It should say on the label what weight it is, or if not you can post pics on here and we should be able to identify them. I ask because I like to ensure I have a rug for every occasion, so your rug choice may depend on what you already have - for example, my mare came to me without anything so I bought her a lightweight (no fill) turnout, a 100g, 200g, 300g and 400g (all with detachable necks; yes she was spoilt!) My mum's new pony came with a 40g and a 200g, so we have just bought her a lightweight rain sheet without any filling just to keep the rain off her. If she needs an in-between rug I'll try to get something about 100-150g, and anything heavier I'll get her a 300-350g. I doubt a mountain pony will need much more than a rain sheet, though!

I am a bit of a Rug Queen... what I haven't mentioned is that my mare had a rug of every weight for indoors too, plus two weights of cooler rug, thin stable sheets, and spares for competition use so she went to parties without poo stained rugs... I may have a "thing" about rugs  :D

Thanks for all the help! i not actually sure what weights her rugs are atm i will check when i next go down, but there all pretty worn and need a good ol'wash which is why for xmas (but early!) im treating her to 2 rugs but i really dont know what ones weight or anything so maybe 150/200g turn out? and fleece?!

Have a look at the Amigo 1200D range of rugs (avoid the cheaper 600D for winter, though); they do lite, medium and heavy weight versions. If you're not clipping a lite or medium should be absolutely fine, I'm sure. Choice of weight is depending on what the worst winter weather's like in your neck of the woods and whether you stable at night or not. I can really recommend these as a good, tough rug that should be wind and waterproof and last well. :)

If you bought a lite verson you could always layer it with a stable rug for very cold weather. I quite like the thermatex-like copy rugs (eg: a Coolex rug (look on eBay). They are warm and comfy and work well under a turnout rug. Maybe worth considering as your second rug?

Most good turnout rugs are breathable and so suitable for stable or outside. If you really want to save on rug cleaning then stick with turnout rugs for inside too. They stop stable stains and only need cleaning at the end of the winter, so saving you pots of money.
Not sure where in Herts you are, but try Hertford Horse Bits. They have a great stock of rugs and get end of range Shires rugs so prices are very competitive.
