Hi All

It's been a vrey long time since i last posted, but I'm hoping you may be able to help me out :) I moved to Australia over 2 years ago and now have a lovely TB x WB on loan who I intend to buy early next year. It may be summer out hear at the moment but I'm already thinking about winter :( when I took on my lovely horsey, we were just coming out of winter and he was very poor, with some quite horrendous wither sores. I am in Melbourne so the seasons are similar to the UK, only about 5-10 degrees warmer. I'm after a medium weight turnout that I can add a nother rug underneath if necessary, as he lives out full time, preferably with a detachable neck.

I was looking to buy a Fal but I see they've gone under :( The rugs we have over here i do not think are suitable for his shape, mainly weatherbeeta, saxon and kool coat would be the brands you might recognise. The best for high withers are a brand called Skye Park but they are heavy canvas and i dont think they will keep him warm enough in my opinion. I think that Fal would have suited him perfectly, so I'm really gutted that I'm struggling so much to find them!

Cruise is 17.1hh, with a monster wither and well set shoulders. He takes a 6'9 rug. I have a weatherbeeta light weight with neck that I bought him for spring, which seems OK on his wither but rubs his shoulders and crest. His neck is also fairly deep now that he's gained the correct condition, so the tightness can only get worse.

Sooooooooo, what are your recommendations? Given my limited options here I am more than happy to import to make sure he has the correct wardrobe for winter, and no more bleeding wither! (poor bugger :( )

Even if it takes me 3 months to find the right rug before winter sets in, I'm happy, I just need to get him catered for :)

Thanks!

My TB has big shoulders and very high withers and I struggled sixteen years ago to find a rug which didn't make him sore and bad tempered when I was putting it on.
Lightweight cordura **seamless** Rambo Wugs were the answer for him then and I have stuck with Horseware because they always line their rugs with nylon. The neck it generous enough to accomodate his low set on neck and big shoulders so when he puts his head down to eat, the rug slips forward and there is enough room in the neck that it doesn't pull down on his withers.
I have never found my boy to be cold, he is snug and cosy even after the worst weathers.
I invested a few years ago in the then latest Rambo Duo and have been very pleased as always with the quality and fit without any rubs or bald patches.

Hey both,

Thanks for your replies. on my old girl, i used to find the Horseware rugs very tight around the neck (she took a 5'6-5'9 rug at 14.1hh), this was 10 years ago that I was shopping for a wardrobe for her, so do you think that this has changed? Or would you recommend taking a slightly bigger size? Cruise's sheets are 6'6, and his turnouts 6'9 to allow for under rugging.

Thanks!

I've got a high withered TB & I mainly use premier equine as they have a high cut(not half neck) that suit him. Got an oldish full neck weatherbeeta that's fine & a couple of rhino wugs(1/2 neck) that sit well on him. Years ago I used to have a sheepskin pad sewn into a bib to alleviate the problem.
