Winter Turnout

Hi All

How many of you do not have any winter turn out?

We have to bring the horses in from start of Dec - end of Feb as our land simply cannot cope when we have bad rain, this week they have had to stay in for a few days as the rain has been bad over night, this has never been a problem for me as my 4 other horses quite like being in and will just stand at the gate waiting to come in if it's raining and they are no different to ride if they have been in, however i now have a 5 yo that's and after staying in for a few days this week he has been very hot to ride. He is a hot horse anyway but now he is, lets just say there are moments at the start where he is very opinionated when being ridden (but i must add once he has settled i can actually use the extra energy in a positive way) He is an absolute angel in every other aspect i.e handling. He's not naughty he just feels like a coiled spring underneath me which could possibly explode.

We have access to sand pens that he can go out in to let off some steam but typically he doesnt do anything just stands there even if i put him out with another horse, after these few days i am now starting to dread winter and he's going to have to be ridden every day which i don't like doing as he's still young and plus i think they deserve at least one day off if they have worked well.

Unfortunately i am limited to other yards in my area, the land seems to be crap so there are only 2 yards close enough which allows winter turnout but then they don't have any facilities just stables and fields, mine are competition horses so i need a decent arena with lighting so i can ride in the evenings after work. Plus i love it where i am and love the people so i am in a bit of a dilemma. Also these 2 yards only offer group turnout, 2 of mine cannot go with other horses as they are wimps and we've had enough kicks to last us a life time

Anyone else going to be in this situation with winter approaching?

Ours are in overnight mid oct - april but they go out approx. 8-5 every day without fail. I feel very strongly that horses should not be kept in 24/7 unless on box rest and would never go to a yard that restricted turnout. I would prioritise this over riding facilities travelling distance etc
