Has anybody heard rumours or predictions about the weather coming our way this winter?

We had such a mild approach to Christmas last year, the horses stayed living out until December and our rose bushes were actually in flower on Christmas day!

This year already seems colder in comparison. Am wondering if we're in for a chilly one again? Anybody heard anything?

Well I think it is anyone's guess....

Metcheck have a new long term forecast, and up until march this winter looks similiar to last, but probably as they have just based this years on last.

Other reports have claimed it is going to be very snowy and icy, but again they predicted this last year and never happened!

All I can say is that if the last few days have been anything to go by, autumn/winter has come a lot earlier than is previous yrs, but does not necessarily indicate the winter will be colder, just longer.

Mine never come in overnight until mid oct, and have been really fighting the urge to get them in now as don't want to start delving into winter bedding and haylage stores - I just hope I don't pay for it by them going down with mud fever or other weather related conditions.

Exacta was forecasting a cold snowy winter not so long ago, I've heard elsewhere that it's supposed to be mild too, so based on that I'm plumping for something in the middle. :D

My prediction is that it will be cold, damp and miserable. It always is. Cold is cold and degree readings are just arbitrary to me. My fingernails are blue as I type and if I didn't have a shoulder injury I'd be out in the yard getting firewood right now.

On a serious note, last September was cold and we had a lovely October. So, I'm looking foward to another Indian summer! :)

Have we actually had summer? I thought this year the weather has decided it would skip summer and just have spring, autumn and winter.
I actually don't mind a bit of frost as just hate the sloppy muddy ground.

I would be so happy with ice! Especially now we have an indoor. I don't mean stupid temperatures like -18C, but -6C at night and then -2C in the day would be perfect....no mud!

However, I've heard it's going to be warmer and very wet :( Noooooo!

Ours were out 24/7 til November last year, really hoping for that again.

Some of my rabbits are moulting by the handful, literally wearing dead hair skirts every morning. They didn't do it last year but did the year before so I'm guessing they think it's going to be very cold and snowy. No more shows for us this year.

I'd love a nice cold, crisp winter but not so cold that the arena surface freezes or the roads become like ice rinks!

I love riding when it's cold - my favourite weather for riding!

There was something on BBC about a berry bush in the cairngorms that had successfully "predicted" the last few bad winters - apparently on those occassions the berrys were significantly larger than normal. It's apparently suggesting another cold, snowy winter this year.

I hope it's wrong - being pretty much snowbound at the yard from November until February/March was not fun!

The weather is just useless, I think we should sack it and get a new weather that will do exactly what we want, long warm sunny days in summer with a little rain overnight (except during harvest/hay time when it should remain dry with a nice breeze to aid drying). Then we should have lovely autumnal days, not too cold and a little breezy with rain overnight and lovely crisp winters, frozen mud but no ice on the roads or water troughs followed by a mild, sunny and dry (except at night) spring.

Wet wet wet, oh and windy

Ah, just like last winter then!

I have my bid in for another one like 2010/11 or 2009/10. Snow and ice. Nice riding weather :) Nothing like bright blue skies, no wind, a light covering of snow and -4 to guarantee a nice ride (and we can canter on the tarmac track :D).

If we get this new weather that does what we tell it WHY would we have winter at all. lets just go straight form autumn to spring. :D

My only prediction for this winter is....no matter what sort we have, people will still be moaning. :p

Well my hubby's forecast is clearly snow since two sledges arrived in the post last week. I was a bit shocked and laughed and his reply was 'well you cant buy sledges when the snow is here. we wont even beable to get of the village'. Very true! Weve just moved to dartmoor and hes clearly very excited about the fact that we are bound to get snow!

If it's wet and windy, it's much better for riding in than frosty and too dangerous with the ice! It might not be pleasant riding in the wind and rain, BUT at least my horse's legs will stay under them.... :p

Two different people - one a farmer and the other a chap who does odd-jobbing round our village - have told me the same thing, but I don't the the source of their wisdom....that September would be rubbish!!, October would be very pleasant, and that there would be a freak heatwave in November.

Judging by the berries I'd predict a cold winter, but who knows. We live in a crazy climate. I've ridden in a T-shirt on Boxing Day, but have often had snow on my mid-April birthday. We've had meals outside in November, and this year I was lighting our fire in August. Anyway, it gives us all something to talk about..............

claribella, you know what they say about dartmoor "it rains for six months of the year.............and the rest of the time, it's winter!"

Having been glued to weather forecasts, I'm plumping for "unsettled" the term that forecasters seem to use more and more these days - goodness knows why "unsettled" though as it seems pretty "settled" to me, with RAIN:rolleyes:

We will have snow - guaranteed, and daytime temps will average out at about -10C :) I like winter.

Spanish Eyes - "it rains for six months of the year.............and the rest of the time, it's winter!" :D

There is something like that here, four seasons =

Almost Winter
Winter
Still Winter
Road Repair

:) :) :)

Ive been told by numerous people its meant to be a "bad winter like 2009 and 2010" but I think up here they always say that, its always doom and gloom ;) Im hoping it'll be like last winter, we only had 2 short spells of snow which was so easy - my OH was most upset as he'd bought a snowboard. I dont mind rain, at least that doesnt make travelling a problem. We've just bought a house above the snow line so I really hope its not a bad winter or I'll be spending it in cooped up in the house not being able to get out! My brother has the right idea, he's moving in November to Dubai...!
