Holy MOLY!

He's HYPP N/H which explains the HUGE muscles, but why can't he move???

It's sick, am I correct in saying he's not uniting and trotting properly because he's not right in front, and this forcing him to step forward with his hinds quicker to take the strain?

Jeeez, that is disgusting! It is so ugly and uncomfortable looking? Have you seen the comments in the Guest Book... what is wrong with these people????

Its hobbling!

Urgh!

That has made me feel sick. He looks like one of those Disney cartoon horses. The ones that are so disproportionate that they wouldnt be right if they were real. Only this one clearly is real...

I thnk that obsese horses are totally the owners responsibiltiy- there are no excuses these days to justify an animal looking like that.
It disgusts me that the stud can get away with it saying that thus is a good example of type.
1. the horse is obses
2. the horse is lame
3.Its on stud duty
4.The stud are behaivng irresponsibly promoting that.

I am sorry but it disgusts me. I am all for true to type animals, and stallions carrying more muscle than some geldings but that is horendous.
They and everyone that thinks this is ok need some serious education!!!

Its joints from what you can see in the video are awful. There are lumps all over them. It moves like it has laminitus and can't carry its own weight. How sad to see the approval from people who obviously don't know any better.

What is HYPP N/H?

[/ QUOTE ]

I wondered that as well. It gets mentioned a lot on Fuglyhorse. i googled for this

"Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP) is an inherited disease of the muscle, which is caused by a genetic defect. In the muscle of affected horses, a point mutation exists in the sodium channel gene and is passed on to offspring.

Sodium channels are "pores" in the muscle cell membrane which control contraction of the muscle fibers. When the defective sodium channel gene is present, the channel becomes "leaky" and makes the muscle overly excitable and contract involuntarily. The channel becomes "leaky" when potassium levels fluctuate in the blood. This may occur with fasting followed by consumption of a high potassium feed such as alfalfa. Hyperkalemia, which is an excessive amount of potassium in the blood, causes the muscles in the horse to contract more readily than normal. This makes the horse susceptible to sporadic episodes of muscle tremors or paralysis.

This genetic defect has been identified in descendents of the American Quarter Horse sire, Impressive. The original genetic defect causing HYPP was a natural mutation that occurred as part of the evolutionary process. The majority of such mutations, which are constantly occurring, are not compatible with survival. However, the genetic mutation causing HYPP produced a functional, yet altered, sodium ion channel. This gene mutation is not a product of inbreeding. The gene mutation causing HYPP inadvertently became widespread when breeders sought to produce horses with heavy musculature. To date, confirmed cases of HYPP have been restricted to descendants of this horse."

The N/H means I believe that he has only one gene for the disease, so will only throw foals with it if the mare has the faulty gene as well (not up on breeding and genetics though, so could be wrong).

Whatever it is, the poor horse looks quite grotesque. He'd be much happier if he dropped at least 100 kilos.

I don't know much but am assuming that this is a "halter" horse. There is BIG money in showing in USA and that means breeding to extremes in some cases...

In my opinion these type of halter horses are disgusting and owners should be shot but that is never going to happen and no doubt it will slowly but surely creep into our show circuit too...

He's probably crippled because, apart from all the muscles etc, they trim their feet so they are totally tiny and therefore it makes their forearms and muscles look even bigger.

It's absolutely disgusting but is the "norm" apparently on the show scene over there. I've heard some of the horrors that they do to Pleasure horses; not very pleasurable...

The fact that this horse has won so many points etc says it all, horses that look like that win and so that is what people are going to keep doing and pushing the breed type to the limit.

the video is down the bottom of the page,
like magicmelon said post your disapproval in the guestbook. that poor horse.
some people are really sick and evil

I can't open the video unfortunately but the pic says enough! I feel sorry for any small mares that thing covers, they'll be squashed!!! Made me think of human body builders that take steroids to the point that they look grotesque. Why or earth would anyone want a foal by THAT?!?
