Woah, you'd think a rug would offer some protection in a stable fire....

:( :( :( :(
RIP poor Harvey
healing ((((((((((vibes)))))))))) for Reggie and ((((((((hugs)))))))) to the owners.
No i'm not surprised. The fire would have been very hot and it does say the rug was actually on fire.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me.... when I think of stable rugs I generally think of the traditional fleecy things we used to use which would burn rather than melt. We had a plan for fires and all the horses were trained to walk in blindfolds should anything happen but it's not something you really try to think about...

When I had a house fire - it was greatly accelerated by the number of underrugs (3) that were drying in the kitchen. They went up as though petrol had been poured on them and also greatly contributed to the heavy smoke which quickly spread. I learnt the hard way to a: close ALL doors in the event of a fire - really does reduce damage - stop smoke spreading and b: keep your mobile in your room at night (fire will melt phone lines).. and of course you should have your handbag/car keys with you in your room to prevent thieves retrieving what we all tend to leave by the door....

For anyone interested the people with the horse in question go on Horse Gossip and have posted pictures etc of this poor horse - they are also having a collection for help with vets fees (horse was not insured) and people are also sending spare items they no longer use.
