I had the dentist out for my boy for the first time since i bought him and he told me that one of his wolf teeth is growing sideways and that the other one is blind. He has advised me to have them removed asap. Was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this and did it cause any probs when removing them? He's having it done under sedation.

It's a very common procedure, not normally any major problems.
You'll obviously need your vet out to sedate. You may find that you need xrays for the blind tooth.

Thanks, i've just spoken to my vet and he's happy to do the removal himself which saves me trying to organise the dentist and the vet at the same time. He said he won't do x-rays as although the tooth is blind it can be felt through the skin. This means he can also do it at my yard rather than at the vets which is easier.

Yeah the one coming out sideways you can feel from the outside of his mouth so it must be irritating (although so far he hasn't shown any probs). The dentist said he may start throwing his head about if i left it which i can totally understand as i wouldn't like it!

I did wonder about the time off as i've only had a horse have normal ones removed. I'm sure he won't mind a week or more off!!! I can always do a bit of free schooling.

2 of mine have had to have wolf teeth out, Teddy had both his growing along the gum line flat, he had to have 2 weeks off after they were taken out but he had absolutely no trouble. My mare has had 3 removed in total (though I am trying to work that one out as all 3 supposedly came from the top!) I had 1 removed when she was 3 whilst she was being backed and broken, so she had a week off in the middle of her education! and then she has had 2 removed whilst she was at the yard she use to be at to compete.

Well he's had it done and all went smoothly, the vet doesn't think we will have any probs when the bit goes back in after his break as they are well up the side of the mouth.
