Do they cause much pain as they come through?

My horse is 5 and as I was putting his bridle on tonight I noticed they are coming though and to be fair the area does look a bit sore.

When would you decide they should be removed?

My 2.5 year old has his and the reason I had his teeth done is because I thought he was in pain, If i touched the sides of his face he would try and bite which was very unlike him and he just seemed off to me and the vet told me that his wolf teeth coming in wouldn't have caused that reaction in him but since having his teeth done he's alot better. Even though she also said that they don't always bother them (She said the only reason she didn't take them out when she was rasping was cause she didn't have the tool with her) I will probably have them removed in January or before he's backed as I'd rather have them out before they cause him any problems etc

If the wolf teeth are big enough for you to see when putting the bridle on I suspect they may well be causing some problems, they are usually fairly small, set tight against the premolars and normally difficult to see, if they are big they will potentially be causing discomfort if not worse as they might be touching the bit when you are riding although it is often the tiny ones that cause the most problems.

They are really obvious!! I always have to put my thumb in his month to get him to open up and last night I noticed what felt like a tooth trying to push through the gum but on both sides there was a massive lump and the gum did look a bit sore!! he wasn't being bity or anything! but he has started being a total s h i t to ride! literally won't go forward and started bucking and rearing!! chucked me off mid canter on saturday! I'd put it down to possibly haylage and currently being out on lush grass!!

Are you sure they are not his tushes coming through it seems a bit late if he is 5 but I would still be surprised if wolf teeth are so obvious, if they are wolf teeth then they will be very uncomfortable and will explain why he was so naughty.

Oh god, yes I might be wrong!! i've just googles tushes and I don't think they are his wolf teeth now, doh!

The image shows them as canines :/ I always thought that these were wolf teeth!!? Feel silly now

My boy had his canines come through at 5, he was in a bit of pain when they were coming through. Definitely sounds like these rather than wolf teeth!

You will not be the first person to make this mistake, especially as you have previously owned a mare, mares do not often get tushes/ canines so you will not be used to seeing them, you may have to give him some time for them to break through, a vet or dentist may put a nick in the gum to allow the tooth to erupt and reduce the pressure if it goes on a while, rubbing some Bongela on may help in the meantime.

Oh I'm glad you said that because I've defo never seem them on my mare, was planning on checking her mouth tonight, although her teeth are like pegs now that shes 30!!

I always thought it was wolf teeth that mares didn't get, which is why I assumed that this is what I was seeing!

So do vets leave these canine teeth in normally? will get him some bongela when I pop out at lunch time! Do you think I should stop putting his bit in his mount until they are through properly? Just lunge him in a head collar for a while?

The tushes are full teeth so they will not be removed , if the area is really sore it may be worth giving him a few days without a bit until you can see the actual tooth beginning to show properly and the pressure on the gum will be less, not all horses will have problems but as your horse is getting them very late, are you sure he is 5 rising 6 and not 4 rising 5, as that is the age they usually come through and as most are only in light work at the time it is not much of an issue.

Yep defo sure of his age! I've had him since he was 18 months old, know his half bro, who's the same age! still in contact with his breeder etc! so certain, he was 5 in may.

He's massively sensitive, he doesn't cope well with pain at all!

I tried to take some pics tonight but hold his head still, his mouth open and pressing the camera button was a bit too challenging on my own! but I'm pretty sure it must be causing him some pain! the left hand side looks a bit red where its coming through but the left looks like it might have an infection, the gum looks a yellowy on the lump where the tooth is coming through and just behind that too! he didn't want me to look at that side, but was quite happy to let me look at the left side!

luckily he's only in light work anyway, as he's been off work for a while as he's been lame on and off for the last year! :(
