Just a quick one are horses meant to be sedated when having wolf teeth out? Have you ever known of a horse not to be sedated to have wolf teeth out? How long should you leave it before riding after wolf teeth have been taken out?

Thanks in advanced, a slightly worried but won’t go into in yet,
JoElla

My pony had his wolf teeth removed and he was sedated by the vet and they were removed by the EDT with the vet in attendance at the yard. I was told not to put a bit in his mouth for 3 weeks.

Hope this helps

The vet is taking my baby's wolf teeth out next week, I just assumed he would need to sedate, wouldn't be happy not sedating for this sort of procedure, last thing you want is having a horse with issues about his mouth!

my mate had the dentist out to her youngster and he just pulled them out with no sedation, she was fine.
The roots are only very small so a little twist wil remove them.

4 year old on my yard had her wolf teeth out without sedation (and without any problems!) this summer. She is a very laid back sort though.

The owner was advised not to ride with a bit in for 10 days after.

Sprite had her wolf teeth removed earlier this year - they were done by the vet under IV sedation, which is just as well as they were quite hard to get out! I gather some come out more easily than others. Was advised by the vet not to use a bit for at least a week afterwards.

My equine dentist also just knocked 'em out, I was somewhat amazed that he did this as I'd always known horses to be sedated however my boy didn't even react and believe me he does not do pain!

My pony's were incredibly difficult to get out, both the vet and dentist were struggling and had to cut his gums in the end, it was horrible and I wish I'd just left them now as they were'nt causing him any problems at all.

My NF mare had her wolf teeth out at 5 with no sedation and was ridden 4 days later. We had no problems when they were taken out or afterwards. Plus she was a lot more manageable afterwards.

Depends on age of horse. Over 6/7 I'd say sedation as they are well set. Seen it done very pro' and would defo go with sedation for the horses sake!!
Riding a week later though recommendations are 2 wks after.

as they have very little root they come out very easy and quick no sedation needed with good dentist 3 or four days off .dont worry
