The dentist came out this morning and advised that she has her wolf teeth out as they are very prominent and almost certainly getting in the way of her double jointed snaffle - this of course reflects her behaviour when i ask for contact (head shaking etc) they are also like razors

he is coming back next week with the vet for sedation and removal.
Has anyone had thier horses wolf teeth removed - did it make a difference afterwards?

My mare had a huge one that didn't bother her at all for years, last time the dentist came out it was a bit loose so he pulled it out, hasn't made any difference to her riding at all... my dentist had said that it was only worth having it removed if it actually did affect her riding

I have to wait a week now for dentist to come out again, i would however want to ride her in the meantime but don't fancy using the jointed snaffle - i have a straight bar rubber bit (like a first bit) do you think it maybe worth trying her in that for now?

Sometimes horses wolf teeth do not affect the bit, however most dentists will come back to take them out if they are a problem. By the sounds of it I think you should see a huge improvement when you ask for a contact after extraction.
Some older horses will have got used to the wolf teeth hence some riders do not feel any difference after extraction. Most dentists will try to remove wolf teeth before 5 years of age, as after this the wolf teeth then set in the sockets and can become harder to remove.

However after extraction it is advised you don't put a bit in her mouth for 10-14 days. It does depend, some dentists will say to wait for a week, and some will say 2 weeks. If it were me I would leave for 10-14 days. I think you are fine to keep riding until the dentist comes but just don't ask for much of a contact, a change of bit will not make much difference if her wolf teeth are the problem

Yeah he said 10 days after the removal.
Am really hoping for improvement! i want to crack on with our ambition do do some local dressage this year!
Do you think it maybe worth changing her to the straight bar rubber bit for now?

I think the rubber may help, however I am not too sure on using a straight bar, as a jointed snaffle will have some give in it...sorry!

Ahh it was just going on what the dentist said about the jointed snaffle - when it was bending it was putting pressure on the wolf teeth, so i thought the straight bar wouldn't have the nut cracker action and therefore be a bit milder?

Heather Bambi, that is interesting about doing it before they are 5.
Both the dentist and vet have said to leave our babys wolf teeth in, she is rising 4.
They both said only take them out if they become a problem, the vet went on to say, new thourghts are that it could be other new teeth coming through causing problems in youngsters not always the wolf teeth.
Sorry to highjack your thread cobface.
