Wolf Teeth - to remove or not?

That is what my vet recommended and it seems logical. Though when vet can to do my girls last week it had disappeared. He began to think he imagined seeing one last autumn but he showed it to me so it was there. It must have been shallow and popped out with other tooth movement!

I personally do.

My gelding came to me aged 10 with many ridden problems. On having all the usual checks, the dentist found a small wolf tooth that was removed. It was quite flat to the gum but very smooth. Dentist said it was smooth as the bit rubs it. He is much better without out.

My mare also had hers out after backing, before doing any real work.

I always do aswell. For the sake of £55 i get the peace of mind to know that my horse is totally comfortable in his mouth. A friends youngster hasn't had his out and often locks and leans and Im convinced that this is why.

Interesting thread. My mare is just turning 6 and has always been very fussy with her mouth! She's improved loads, but is still very sensitive. She is due the dentist soon, so I'll ask about wolf teeth.

I had two removed from my gelding at 2yrs, before he was bitted. They are pointless and it removes the ongoing 'wondering' whether they are causing discomfort. Now i am sure they are not! Usually makes them more forward going aswell-always a bonus! Short procedure even though his were big, well wedged in. Back up stuffing his face in an hour

I was surprised how way the procedure was too actually. And cheap! Had the dentist out who spotted the tooth, so he said he would come back when the vet was out doing vaccinations. Vet came and sedated, stayed around for 30 minutes in case the tooth was difficult and a local was required. Vet charged about £18 on top of the vaccination bill, and dentist charged a fiver to take it out! It was out in less than 2 minutes.

am toying with it. my filly has four - strange girl. edt said to leave unless they seem to bother her. she was backd over chritmas and seems to be fine so far

2 schools of thought on that one. Personally I am firmly in the camp of take them out as a 3 yo prior to breaking.

It's so cheap it's worth doing anyway. Mine have wolf teeth out apart from the horse I bought as an 8 year old, he didn't have them removed and hadn't caused an issue by that age so I assumed all was fine

This is really interesting as I had the vet out to look at my 2.5 year old and mentioned about wolf teeth and she said if they're not causing any problems to avoid taking them out! I asked as a friend's 3.5 year old has hers removed. I don't plan to back my youngster til next year but they're already coming through!

I got my boy as a rising 6 year old, he still had his wolf teeth and still does. He's 15 this year, they've never caused him any trouble, but he has a funny "ridge" on one side of his mouth that requires rasping every 6 months, and you know it's getting close to rasing time as he really leans! EDT says to leave the wolf teeth as they don't seem to bother him.

Thanks folks. Think will arrange to get them out as at his last dental vet was a bit neither here or there about removing them hence my query. They look big to me compared to some wolf teeth. One of my older horses has one left which never caused an issue but he was fussy in his mouth at age 5/6
