When I got back from hacking today I noticed lots of blood around my horses mouth and on closer inspection this was coming from one of his wolfe teeth which wasn't much above the gum line - now I can't remember whether he had a full one on that side of whether it's been knocked and that's the problem or whether its just gone rotten and that's the problem.

So he's off to vet on Monday to have it looked at - has anyone had one of these taken out - what should I expect?

Had quite a few removed from various horses by my EDT. It can look a bit gruesome but has never caused the horse any problem.

ussually i have the wolf teeth taken out! relatively little teeth but they can cause a lot of problems and they dont need them for anything! if he will let you flush his mouth out with saline solution for next couple of days to keep clean.

thanks for responses - just wondering how long you gave your horses off before riding?

I've got saddle fitter coming the day after so just wondering whether I need to move him back a few days

Wolf teeth are usually not very big, and aren't rooted too deep.

The vet removes them with an apple corer type instrument and they tend to come out quite easily!!

The mouth will bleed but heal quite quickly, although the horse may feel a little different in the mouth for a few weeks afterwards

Usually, a couple of days is long enough for it to heal

ah - thanks for that! that's not so good news!!

Yes having just researched on internet - it is his canine teeth that he's having a problem with

Try not to worry, it is an awkward tooth to remove as it hooks round and travels up the interdental space/bars but it isnt impossible; remember if it is diseased it will have lost some periodontal attachment so would be easier to remove.

Canines are fighting teeth in the wild, which is why they need to be pretty resiliant!
