"A woman has been banned from owning horses for three years after a pony in her care was discoverd with hooves more than 1m long" quoted from this weeks H&H.

It disgusts me what these people can do to horses and all other living animales. IMO these people shouldn't be allowed to have any animales in their care for the rest of there life.

The pony was later put down

I think that you'll find that as she (probably) pleaded guilty the 'system' allows this guilty plea to be taken into account and the person then gets a reduced sentence (happens all the time with robberies, etc.)

Also our current 'thinking' in regards to criminal acts is that the perpetrator can be 'reformed' rather than 'punished' by the 'system'.

......and of course all the prisons are full as well

so I expect that the judge has followed Home Office sentencing guidelines

Now as the Home Office has been stated to be 'not fit for purpose' and has been run by a Labour Gov. for the last 10 years

I suggest everyone that thinks this sort of sentence is wrong votes for either the LibDems, Conservatives, ScotNat/WelshNat if appropriate, at the next election.

"Tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime" - NO - I don't think so !!!

There's a new law coming in Feb, which allows various bodies to prosecute people for things such as this, It will have backing from vets, they will be given more power to state animal in distress or uncared for. That's what i have been told.

I know it seems that all they get is a fine and not allowed to keep any animales for a certain amount of time and then they will get some more animales and the same thing will happen again

I agree that she should have had a more suitable punishment than being banned from keeping animals for 3 years. If I remember didn't the woman use the excuse of illness as to why she hadn't been able to care for them.If her illness is that awful that she couldn't care for animals then why keep them at all.She could easily of found someone willing to take them on for her.We had 2 horses come into the yard last week. One of them had feet about 18 inches overgrown and could barely stand. She has to have her feet trimmed in stages so as to prevent her coming to more injury. The previous owner claimed they had been out on loan for a year and it was obvious that they hadn't seen a farrier in that time but as to why she didn't get immediate farrier or vetinary attention as soon as they came back is beyond me.Instead she chose to sell the horses on cheaply asap.

Cruelty goes on every single day right under our noeses but what do you do as unless these animals are so far gone nobody seems to want to know. There is a owner on our yard with a number of horses that they are obviously neglecting they have only been given 1 hay net a day (which they have been stabled 24 7 for the last 2 weeks) only hard food when they can afford it and was seen to have bought another horse only a few days ago and put it on another livery yard!I have been going and sneaking food in for them when the owners are not around but I myself am on a low budget but still am able to give them a handful of chaff and some carrots and still care for my own horse.Money is not an issue laziness is.I was bought my horse for 1000 pounds as I was suffering from depression and I owe my life to my horse as he has given me so much it makes me so angry how anyone can treat any horse badly when all they ask for is love and respect
