Woman out riding in critical condition after being hit by a truck

Heard about this on the radio yesterday, the woman is still in critical condition and there's been no word about the horse, but have to assume the worst given there was a truck involved and the driver was hospitalised

poor horse, poor poor lady, poor truck driver too though.
the thing is, we forget that because we can hear drivers coming, they can't hear or see us...
obv we don't know whether the driver was on the wrong side of the road or something BUT
imho it is the rider's responsibility to get out of the way around a corner and to leave the road as clear as possible. i always trot on fast round blind corners so i get out of the 'danger zone' of the first 50-100 yards or so, and if i can hear something coming towards me, i'll wait before entering that danger zone too. losing a horse on the roads is one of my worst nightmares.

I've been saying for years that people on bikes should use the road like a pedestrian ie facing the oncoming traffic, as I've nearly hit several cyclist who've been "invisible" to me around a corner, or have swerved in front of me. I'm thinking it might be an idea if we rode our horses that way as well ...

thoughts are with all involved in this horrible incident

Sadly most roads are no longer safe for horses, the sat nav zombie drivers with little or no regard for what may be round the next corner of the lane or minor road they are hurtling along as a short cut have put pay to that, locals with scant regard to road safety also dont help
