So I was walking the dogs yesterday and I was watching the old girl struggling with her back legs and knowing I need to make a decision soon.

I even phoned the vet's practice to double check on euthanasia costs etc.

I'd got myself into a bit of a state really.

There is a lady I see often on walks, who always admires Salem from afar and shouts over as to how the old girl is doing.
But she has her dog with her, so I am always moving away from her for fear of any ugliness between the dogs.

Anyway, I saw her yesterday outside the shop, sans her dog and she came over and had a good chat with me. Turns out she's had GSDs for years and she knew exactly what I was talking about. She spoke to me for ages. I am so honoured she would take time out of her day to comfort a complete stranger. I felt foolish with my eyes welling up and my bottom lip wobbling, but she was just so kind.

There are often horror stories regarding members of the public. But there are some wonderful people out there too.

It's always nice when someone you don't know can put you at ease and make you feel better.

When we lost our old girl in 2009 it was very sudden and I didn't get to say goodbye. My OH drove me to the vets to meet my dad and brother and whilst dad was in the vets and OH not sure what to do, bro and I were in floods, a woman walking back to her car and came over, put her arms around both of us and said "I know I don't know you but I know what you're going through" and gave us a big hug.

I am sorry about your dog, but good on you for not being selfish, and happy a women has given you abit of happiness in a sad time.

Reminds me of an old gentleman I often meet on walks (brilliant owner with his old dog - must be nearing his 90s though!) and I usually stop and talk to him for a bit, and he loves my two. I told him a while ago about my concern for the travellers (nothing against them but these bunch have a reputation) who had shown a lot of interest in my two puppies. And he said he'd keep a look out for me so he could tell me if they were close by.

It was a small thing, but nice to know a complete stranger has concern for me and my dogs :)
