Well my gorgeous pure new forest mare has a problem....She really badly rubs her tail and forelock. I don't think it's sweet itch (but it could) as it only seems to happen when she's shedding her coat. It's very annoying as i'm keen on showing her and her tail and forelock get us points removed. Yes, i know it's not all about that but i'm a bit worried incase it is sweet itch. I haven't had a vet out but if its comes to it i will!

We've tried lots of different lotions and potions, and some of them work but the best one we've tried so far seems to iratate her.
Does anyone know if this is not unusal for NF's or if they think it is sweet itch?

It sounds like sweet itch to me. My friend's horse had it and she used to bath his tail and mane when itchy with I think Dermoline shampoo. Not 100% sure. She also uses the Rambo Sweet Itch Hoodie rugs which are excellent for it. Its been quite warm lately, been sunny here today and there were midges buzzing about - in November!
 
Well worth looking at the diet.
It is my belief that the epidermal layer often releases
excesses and this will attract mites.
I have no proof other than my experience in working with over 900 laminitics and I got used to seeing an amazing amount of them with sweet itch.
And yet when we altered their diet they seem to get over it, not only that it hardly ever returned.
Hope it gets better whatever it is.
 
Well at the mo she's being feed a very small amount of pony nuts as she scoffs herself with grass.

I hope it's not sweet itch, but if it is then why she only seem to do this when she's shedding her coat? Most of us at our yard (even the pro's) think that when she sheds , because she sheds in huge handfull and then stops then for about 2-3 weeks has extremly lightly, the huge amount irates her or gets stuck in her hair (as her forelock is quite thick and is very afro type)! Could this be right? :confused: :confused: :confused:

when does she rub her mane and tail??


have a livery here that is so itchy bits itself bad in the winter till large sores
