What a blast. We've been out for the first time ever with the Four Shires Bloodhounds today. We were running really late and I had to have a leg up to jump on P as the hunt ride went past. It was all a bit "eeep...rabbit in headlights...what should I be doing". No time for piccies before we set off.

Hacked through the village and up to the start of the stubble fields.

We hit grass and just galloped, and galloped and galloped! I was looking at the rutted combined stubble and thinking "eeeeeeeep!!!"

Within ten mins of cantering/galloping P was dripping in sweat and blowing like a steam train! I was a bit surprised as she's actually really fit at the moment, in alot of work (maybe too much just before a hunt meet).

The first hour was mostly canter/gallop. I didn't expect it to be so fast....but loved it all the same.

We jumped a fair few things, but I didn't over push her as I was conscious that this was much faster and more sustained than anything's P has ever done before. Didn't want to add to much jumping into the mix to tire her even further. We did manage some classic hunter flyers though! Woo hooo from Patches!

Got offered a nice cup of lemonade at the half time break! Perfect! Just what I needed. I had feared they may offer port...and I don't drink!

Second half was at a slightly slower pace, as we were moving more between fields, through gateways, not cantering around the large open stubble. Still loads of cantering and fences though. I'd say we must've done 75% cantering today, when moving, and we were out for three hours.

Feel a little robbed now that we didn't see hounds as this was a pre-hunting fittening meet for horses and riders.....but that's a new challenge for next time.

A few pics as we got back to the car.

She might have seemed tired initially, but as the afternoon wore on she got quite joggy and just wanted to "go". She was well up for it!

Still jogging here as we were just about to turn for the trailer

Electrolytes, no tiger oats tomorrow and she's had Race Ace tonight. She'll have that again tomorrow too.

She got a bit strong cantering (well galloping) downhill at one point and it took a sharp check to bring her back to me. Think downhill...fast...with head between knees. Not nice! LOL. I feel guilty now as I think that pull has just nicked the side of her mouth a touch. Cleaned up it looks ok, tiny, but I've never done anything like that to her before. Then again...I've never been hunting before!

What bit is she in??? I always had to start Amy off in a Kimblewick - and then could revert back to a snaffle once she'd been out a few times........

You most definately do not want head between knees whilst 'cantering' (ha, ha) downhill

I had her in a NS Waterford Universal today. It's the bit I always use for really fast work in company. Some farm rides, if there's just a few of us, I do in my Happy mouth hanging cheek revolver (what a mouthful) snaffle.

I'm not sure if I didn't just pinch her somehow as I took a sharp tug up with my right hand to lift her head. Never had a problem with this bit before. Can't say she really pulled, I just lost her head a few times.

She's got a really soft mouth, generally speaking.

What are the yellow things on the martingales for?

They're our "cap tag". Proof that we've paid up to attend.

ohh Patches - you are the first person ive found that uses a NS waterford universal, ive got my boy in a waterford snaffle but its just not enough. (Bought him when he was in a kimblewick, have tried to paly about and find something he didnt 'sit' on hence trying a waterford) Im tempted to but one but the price tag is making me think twice?

I have ridden her in a waterford gag, which wasn't bad, but I prefer NS waterford. The links feel much rounder....seems kinder somehow.

It's enough for me and P. It may have been too much today as I dropped it on to the lower ring today and added a flash. I suspect she didn't need the flash, or the lower ring...just one would have done.

Either way, I've never caught her mouth before. We've been using this bit for about 3 years for fast work in "fast company". I don't use it for farm rides if I'm going with a couple of friends or my daughter...just when going with bigger, very speedy horses.

From the look on your horses face,he already new he was a hunter.Have a good season, take it easy and jump what your happy with.

Well done, glad you enjoyed it!!! We were going to go cubbing today but pony has a fat fetlock.

I wouldn't worry about the tiny nick, its probably because shes done so much fast sustained galloping. At least by bitting her up a little you both remained safe and in control.

Hi Patches - great report. Glad to hear you had a good time!

Thanks.

I was going to post in the hunting forum but none of the links for pics etc work when I post in there.

Had an absolutely ball! Loved it. Horses and riders all came back tired and happy.
