Ok, so the plan is to semi winter horse out this year! He will be in during the day for 4 or 5 days a week and i'll keep him in overnight if weather is really bad. However, I am really trying to cost cut and so he is going to have to make to with a poor man's bed

I was planning on deep littering and he is pretty wet so was wondering if you think wood pellets or megazorb (or similar) would be better? He was in overnight last year on pellets and I was going through two bags a week on rubber matting.....

(but not deep litter)

I used Megazorb and just gone over to the wood pellets, I like both, but finding I need extra bags of the wood pellets. The wood pellet beding is very easy to muck out or deep litter and keeps the smell down

I also have rubber mats.
What about mixing the two togeter!!!

i used megazorb for a short time. to reduce the cost..my boy is the cleanist of horses, but the smell was awful as i tried to deep litter....i found it quite dusty too - something that i certainly didn't need with a horse with copd....i had to keep topping up with 2 bales a week - although it's cheap to buy it didn't work out any cheaper to me personally...so i went back to good old shavings and have had no bother again since... but each person and horse are different..

Megazorb & the woodpellets are the best horse bedding I have used in terms of keeping the smell at bay and the cost down with less waste. I find the megazorb & woodpellets are round about the same price as shavings and the same amount of dust. I used to mix the megazorb with shavings. Hope that helps

Hi, we have started to use a new horse bedding called Equucel. It is a paper pellet and we have moved away from hemp on our yard. We have stallions with very strong urine and the smell has gone altogether, thank god. Really easy to muck out, cut the time in half and our muck heap is much smaller these days which is great as we are having difficulties getting rid of it. We also have horses with COPD and asthma and they have had no reaction since we have been using it, last couple of months now. One of the helpers on our yard also has hayfever and she loves it. It seems to last around 2-4 times longer depending on how messy the horse is. We can only get it in 500kg bags at the moment, but thats fine for us. I understand it is officially being launched at HOYS this year. To be honest, we love it, took a while to get used to it as it is grey in colour and the pellets are quite hard to start with, but after a few days they break down to a nice soft bed, none of of our horses are eating it either!! We were also told that the company that makes this sells most of their material for insulation, so great for keeping the stable insulated during the winter.
