Wood pellet bedding - does anyone out there use this type of bedding, I have 4 horses and am looking for a bedding to replace the shavings I currently use and which keep going up in price !!!! I have used chopped straw (which they eat!) and hemp (which I didn't like!) Could this be the answer ?

I have used wood pellets for about 12 years and now have a livery yard with 10 liveries - all except one of them uses the wood pellets and they all seem to get on with it really well. We have rubber matting in all stables some horses have a small bed of the wood pellets and some have a huge bed and all sizes in between. Means my muck heaps are relatively small and they rot down to black powder in about 3 months ready to be spread on the fields

the names you may have heard of are Aquamax and Woody Pet bedding. Both are the same. Our nearest saddlery has their own brand. I use one bag a week on my horses and 7 bags to start a bed. It works out at £5.20 a bag to my liveries as I buy 160 bags at a time - 2 pallet load. One pallet load would last 2 horses all winter.

I spread my muck heaps on my fields twice a year and then rest those paddocks for 6 months. it is brilliant stuff and local gardeners come round and happily take away sack fulls.

my muck heaps are now a third of the size of shavings ones and they rot far far quicker than shavings ones. If you gat hold of Wriggly wrigglers website you can buy a coctail of worms suitable for muck heaps and they will rot it down even faster.

I've been using aquamax for a yr now, am looking for a cheaper brand.

Really pleased with it, I use it deep litter and never take the wet out (only if it come to surface), it's created a great solid base and it doesn't smell when you compare to a straw or shaving bed.

It has got a little dusty (the drinker needs cleaning out every few days) in the summer, but it doesn't cause any breathing problems.

I put in one bag every 3wks in the summer (only in during the day) and in winter (in at night) I'll put in a bag every 5 to 7 days depending on how it looks.

Easy to store too. But I do use shavings to make up the banks.

Woody pet is a bit cheaper that Aquamax and just as good. I tried the ecowood stuff and found it to be very dusty so swapped back to Woody Pet.

I use it as a half bed on mats.

Thats interesting. We use more water on the ecowood than on the aquamax but it seems to work very well. Certainly not dusty

Sorry, I disagree there. It's very dusty in the summer. I wouldn't put my horse on it as she has respiratory problems...

We use Woodypet and it is so quick and easy. If it gets a bit dry in the summer we just add more water. We've got rubber mats down so use six bags to start the bed off, and maybe 1 bag every 5 days. I think it works out at just over £5/bag when we buy it by the pallet load. It's great for in the lorry as well as it's so absorbent.
