6 - 8, 10 kg bags to start with, depends how deep and fluffy you want the bed. 2 small watering cans of water, sprinkle to wet surface and leave for half hour, come back and rake.
I've just switched from paper to 5 Star Bedding and on their bags it tells you to position the bags in the stable where you want them, but not too near the walls, slit open and pour in 4.5 litres of water per bag - leave for a bit (I went for lunch at the pub!!), come back and you have lovely fluffy bedding, tip out of bags and make the bed - easy - I have small banks on my no problem.
Love the bedding so far, but will probably switch to White Horse eventually as bit cheaper than 5 Star, but won't be using the fuel pellet companies as I need something specifically for horses due to a very allergy driven mare that I can't take chances with.
I've been using wood pellets now for 6mths and love them!
Its a bit tricky getting the bed right to start with and I over watered mine and had to add loads of extra bags to rectify.
Add 2 -3 normal sized watering cans and leave for a good 1/2 hr. Go back and turn over/rake through. You should still see approx 1/3rd of unsoaked pellets to get it right.
When I top bed up I put a 15kg bag in a wheel barrow and add 1/2 a normal size bucket of water to fluff it up then add to bed. If the bed is a bit damp I add the bag dry.
I bough the fine tine fork and this definately makes it easier to muck out. You can get them off ebay for about £28.
we love them..but we put new in and mix as this seems to dry out the bed after its been mucked out...use 1 15 bag a week on a 16.2 very wet nag..instead of 3 bags of shaving a week!!!
