Q- I keep seeing posts about people using half or one bag per week to top up the beds of their horses, even apparently very dirty ones....??
How, I use Verdo currently and my horse also has large shavings banks as he is very neat and they stay in place perfectly. His poo is all in one pile pretty much. I get half a barrow of droppings with very little bedding on out a day and usually about 2/3 forkfuls of the wettest bit. Mix the rest all back up and level it again.
Is this correct? Only I seem to be using 2/3 bags a week. I don't really mind as I bought a pallet full when I had cash spare in the Autumn so its not feeling like its costing me! but how on earth am I using so much compared to everyone else?

Its also a bit of a yuck colour so im thinking of swapping to another sort when ive used these up, other makes seem more expensive though so id like to be as economical as possible!

i've used Verdo, LWP and now fivestar, at the minute fivestar is winning, verdo I was using 2-3 a week and having a dark wetter bed, felt I was battling it all the time. I've gone for the fivestar more expensive one (think its just under £6 a bag) but Im definately using 1 a week so far and have a much better bed. prefer this to keep topping up 2 - 3 bags a week. they also have video's on their website, might be worth a look (even though you'll need to finish your pallet of verdo before deciding in whether to change):)

My cleanest horse uses 2 15 kg bags a week. The dirtiest uses 4. I don't know how others manage with far less. I don't mix the wet in as it makes the bed damp and horrible to look at.

I'm on Verdo and my horse is worse than yours and I only use 2 bags a week. I put one in on a wednesday and then Sunday. If it looks a bit dark I just fluff a bag up with a bucket of warm water. Or I just put the pellets in with water. Mine doesn't seem dark at all. Maybe it looks dark against your shavings?

Ah yes maybe it is just the colour difference in with shavings, I'd not thought of that...duh! like I say he never touches them so they are literally brand new white looking all the time.
I too mix in dry- seems to work best and least hassle.
I have been recommended 5 star before and just figured id not be able to afford it but I was going on the same amount of bags as im currently using so that's interesting.
Thanks all.

Interesting.... as I'm using Verdo woodstove pellets (:o) and am finding I cannot get away with using less than 3-4 bags per week when my mare is in at night and out for 10hrs during day. They are only 10kg bags, though.

I tend to have a good clear out once a week on a Monday and add 3 fresh bags (left to soak and fluff up before laying) to top up after I've taken out all the very wettest stuff that's accumulated at the back of the stable where my mare pees. By Friday morning I usually like to add another bag (dry pellets) to top up what I've taken out with the poohs so far. I've got rubber mats down and the back 2/3rds of my stable bedded in the pellets. The stable is small for the size horse: 16.2 in a 12ft x 11.5ft space and I think she'd invariably be a lot cleaner if she had a larger box.

I'd definitely tempted to try another brand of pellet (if they are going to work better than the Verdo woodstove ones) but problem is, I have trouble storing a pallet load and it works out so much more expensive to have 1/4 or 1/2 pallets delivered. And no where around here sells the premium equine pellet bedding so I dont even have the option to collect them.

Five Star Professional are between Verdo & Five Star premium performance wise (but cheaper than Verdo). They are also a much lighter pellet in colour so nicer to look at :D

I'm using Corley pellets - was using 2 10kg bags per horse per week but have now changed to adding dry pellets only mixing them in with the top surface of the bed - deep littering in effect. As the beds have got deeper they have got more stable, and the surface is staying dry for 2 of the horses - 1 of the others is a very wet mare and the bed still needs to be a bit deeper for her before the surface stays dry and the other always wees at the front of his bed so it takes a bit more managing. As the beds have got dryer, so they stay whiter!
