Hi all! im considering trying my horse on wood pellets and was just wanting to see what feedback you all have on them ect. ive heard from lots of people that they are much better than straw and shavings (both of which ive used and hated) the main thing i would like to know is are they any good for an extremely messy horse? Are they good value for money? and most of all where can i get them preferably in bulk for a good price?
Thanks :)

I'm a complete convert to them. Been using them for a couple of years now for 9 horses. Saves loads of time as I skip out and only remove wet when it comes to the surface. I can get 9 stables skipped out in under an hour. They are also much cheaper than other types of bedding.

Definitely cheaper to buy in bulk as the majority of the cost is in the haulage. A quick google search should identify a number of companies. The good thing is that you can get 1000kg on a single pallet so they don't take up much storage space. I also store them outside.

Once the bed is set up I use between 15 - 20 kg per horse per week putting them in dry. To set the bed up though you have to add water to the pellets so not ideal at the moment!

They are brilliant and especially for messy horses. You will kick yourself that you didnt change sooner. Mucking out is sooo much quicker and horses seem happier.

Altho you dont get big fluffy beds, when you think about what is natural for a horse to lie on, wood pellets are much closer to a lovely smelling dry forest floor-y type environment. Mine is much happier to lie in anywhere in his stable now: before everywhere the wet used to get kicked around he would avoid. Now that doesnt happen.

NB if you like a bit of fluff, you can mix 3or4 pellets with 1 of something else, I use help (Aubiose) which works really well.
