Wood pellets the same as kitty wood pellets?

Depending on make kitty litter might not be as effectively dust extracted. But yes - wood pellets for horses when dampened turn to a soft absorbent powder.

Cost wise though - horse pellets are massively cheaper. Have you seen the prices pet shops charge for hay / straw for hamster bedding?!

im a bit confused by it all, I went to my local farm shop all set to purchase some pellets but they were £9 a bag and it said to do one stable I need 12 bags :o
I was curious about the kitty litter as I have few bags at home

how many bags do people use, I can do my entire stable in Hunters or Megaspread for about £40.00 .... granted I would throw a third of it away with in a week as he is so wet!

do pellets actually work out cheaper?

£9 a bag for wood pellets! That's almost 200% markup on the per item price you'd pay for a pallet. And they're probably Verdo which are useless IMO.

If you can get a decent price kitty litter (try B&M bargains or Home Bargains) I would suggest buying some bags and putting it under your exhorbitantly priced shavings. It would save you a fair whack. I doubt you would like the look of a wood pellet bed if you're used to Hunters or Megaspread.

I'm predominantly wood pellets, I've used them exclusively for years but this year I've thrown just half a bag of small flake shavings on top and it looks/feels really nice.

Yes they were Verdo, that was all they had. I'm not a fan of hunters or Megaspread I've just exhausted every cheaper option, he is the wettest horse I have ever come across! think id me better putting a waterproof matress in his stable :D
I cant use straw because he eats it and chippings are useless im going through far to much and its costing a fortune.

Verdo is naff stuff, nearly put me off pellets completely! I use Aquamax, £7.45 a bag at my local place. 6 bags to set a bed, topping up one a week, suits me just fine :)

Where are you, HorseKaren? I think you may be near me and I know two places that sell better options than Verdo. PM if you prefer.

I don't think pellet beds are so cheap to put down in the first place but they are cheaper to maintain in the long run.
I've recently had to put 20 bags down for a horse to do box rest for a few weeks, that was painful!

Actually, interesting this thread came up, as I was in B&M the other week to buy cheap but decent hair conditioner to wash a wool numnah, and they had the big bags of Cat Litter Wood Pellets for around £5.99. I did wonder at the time if they'd be any good for horses. But there wasn't enough of a price difference for me to want to risk wasting my money, as it's £7.50 per bag of aquamax for me locally.

If price is an issue wood pellets for biomass boilers are far and away the cheapest, for one thing they have reduced VAT. I bought for cat litter, don't use wood products in stables so I don't know whether they would be too dusty

I wouldn't add them to an established good quality bed, but if they're going under shavings I would. They're very dark.
