Wood pellets

Depends where you buy them from!

We sell ours at £4.50 for a single 10kg bag. Other companies are more expensive, others may be cheaper ie stovies £5.10 single bag but 15kg. The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is liverpool wood pellets which is £10.99 for a single bag (think its 15kg).

You would be better of buying in bulk. we sell in pallets of 20, 40,80 and 100-1 tonne. Wont be of any use unless you are in Scotland though as we are only a small company and only really deliver locally so we dont need to charge delivery on top.

Try your local feed shop they may have them. Prob priced around £5.00/bag.

Most of the bigger companies: stovies, lwp, aquamax, natures best etc wont sell individual bags but you may find them in a local pet shop. If all else fails then buy wood pellet cat litter from the supermarket usually around £10 for a bag I think.

I used to use Corley BioWood pellets- £5.50ish for a bag, or if you bought in bulk- pallet of 100 at a time it was £2.50 a bag (10kg I think, poss 15).
Believe Liverpool pellets are about £2.34 a bag if you buy in bulk again.

We buy ours for £2.97 (white bedding). It's as good as aquamax and we are very pleased with them. Aquamax is now £6.50 a bag in bulk or £7 individually, which is a total rip off and is certainly not worth it, which is why Aquamax have lost our yards business.

Woodpellets are only good, whilst they are a cheaper alternative to other preferable types bedding!

I've just bought some from Liverpool Wood pellets and it worked out at £2.36 for 10KG bag each, but that was buying in bulk. Expect to pay double this if buying individually, and not sure where you might get one on it's own, unless your local feed merchants stock them?

Should probably explain that am Y/O who is making all of the yard turn over to wood pellets, evil woman I am, but it is that or livery goes up for getting muck taken away :D

Where abouts do you get this?

Also, how many bags do you have to buy if you're buying in bulk??

Our yard did that last year. You will get resistance from some :D but they'll do it if the alternative is increase in livery.

Hmmm I'd like to try this but don't think anyone else would be up for it at my yard... Anyone in South Somerset getting an order in that I can tag along with??! LOL

Wel as a YO would you be buying the bedding and selling it on or would you allow your liveries to buy wood pellets where ever they wanted as long as thats what they used?

You would probably be as well buying in bulk and selling on I would think, thats what a few of our customers do, we sell a tonne at £250 (£2.50/bag) and they sell it on at whatever they want but usually about £3-4/bag to their liveries.

We reckon that the average horse will require 80 bags a year, this includes setting the bed up with 20 bags of pellets and then 1 bag pellets a week after and 8 left over for good luck!

I am going to order in bulk and being the business woman I am split the cost equally and not make any money :D

The cost will go on their livery bill each month.

We have been told to set up with 12 bags of pellets then only use one a week from then onward ?

See how you go. We prefer to have cleaner smelling beds and take out all the wee everyday. The instructions are to take out solids and mix the rest up, but you tend to get a strong ammonia smell after a while, even though the woodchips have absorbed it and it is perfectly fine for the horses to stand on. Our horses are in American style barns so it can get a bit pongy with that much wee in the beds in an enclosed building.

If you muck out according to the instructions you'll only need one a week, but if you do it our way you'll need 2 a week for most horses, and any really filthy horses may need 3 a week. It still works out cheaper than shavings.

Kub I get mine from a guy in Wales a pallet load at a time. 20kg bag is £4 plus delivery. Whereabouts are you as you are very welcome to have a sample bag off me.

clip-clop what do you have to order to get the lighter wood pellets, and what have I got the darker or the lighter, how do I know?

the ones on special offer (i think they were just over £200, maybe £225? per tonne) tend to be the darker ones. the light ones are almost white, the colour of milky tea. the darker ones are, um, the colour of strong tea? i'd also say i don't think the darker ones are as absorbant.

that makes no sense. i'm sorry. x

Clipcloppop-I meant that the price for a single bag was £10.99 ie if you order one bag from LWP not if you buy in bulk as at the time thats what I thought the OP was asking.

I would not recommend mixing the wet in. We recommend lifting poo out daily and once a week take out wet patches and top up with a fresh bag. we say 20 bags but our bags are only 10kg, if you buy from lwp or some others they are 15kg bags, should be approx 200kg for a 12x12 box.

I would also recommend LWP unless of course you are near me in which case I recommend C&S Equine Bedding Supplies as we deliver your bedding, set up your stables and come back a week later to check your managing it properly! LOL
