I tried to arrange a woodchip delivery from local feed merchants yesterday, only to be told that they won't deliver any woodchips due to supply shortages. This has also been the theme from a number of other local suppliers, as they don't know when they're getting the next orders in.

Has anyone else experienced the same?

And on a similar vein, anyone know any good woodchip suppliers in Essex?!

Rude woman at feed merchants even had the cheek to patronisingly lecture me on the 'worldwide recession' causing the woodchip shortage - according to her, the world's financial markets are in such dire straits that no-one has the money to buy furniture anymore, and this has led to a lack of woodchips being produced?!?!? Considering I work in the 'financial markets', I very much doubt that the current issues have reached woodchip production already lol!!

Yes there are shortages, apparently isc are running out of hunters and our yard has had a huge delivery of non branded bales as our feed supplier can no longer get hunters. Apparently hunters are reducing their supply by 50% as of January!!

We are in surrey and there is a short supply of Hunters, supplier has sent us a letter saying the same about furniture production being down and we have had different shavings sent

Don't really want to go back on paper

We've been told that there was a big fire at Hunters and that is why there is a shortage. I don't know if that was in the production area or in a storage depot

I think this is a more ongoing issue than just Hunters - I use Royalspan too, and can't get them delivered in either.
Hunters distribute via my yard owner and there is just none coming in to go round.
I really don't want to have to go back to straw, ick!

We got our supply in from essex animal feeds, but i think that was last week. Looks like it's going to be a fight to get them in the future!

ha ha ha well the markets dont look that bad to me though they arnt that great !!!

Cant get Hunters in Kent either and to be honest i think the quality is awful now they fall apart and are very dusty - i have also been told that the lack of making furniture comes to this !!

We are swapping to either Equisorb or Ecobed !! you dont take as much bedding out and much cheaper and better quality !!! xx

That's my yard owner! Everyone is saying the same thing, there's nothing coming in until end of Jan, and even then it's not guaranteed......

We got in about 4 times the amount we normally do, just to see us through, but who knows when the next batch will come in! I might add to the panic buying and load the car up at the wknd and leave some at home in the garage!!!

Ditto.......we haven't even seen the full extent of the effect on the markets themselves yet, it hasn't hit the high street or the housing market entirely yet - I very much doubt it's reached furniture production and woodchips...
It may be something environmental though perhaps?

We had a batch of Hunters that was awful - I was using 3-4 bales a week because it was so cr*p. That's when I started using Royalspan as it was going much further.......but I'm even having trouble getting hold of that now.

no i dont think its hit the furtiture market just yet !!!

I started using Edelspan but they are just waking there prices up as they are the only ones producing the shavings at a decent quality they are above £7 a bale now !!!!

Im definately changing my bedding - the equisorb has been fab for my disgusting gelding !!

I don't use woodchip, but I think my YO managed to get a big delivery in from thorogoods in writtle, all those on woodchip at our yard are strictly rationed.

I was told it was because china or japan had bought up all the wood to burn in their powerstations?

if its not too far away from you then Canvey Supplies sell HUGE bags of woodchips (about 3/4 small bales could fit inside)

dont know price or anything about the company, my riding teacher buys them when she cant get hold of bales and when she needs bedding for the pony barn.
