Have just started to use a wool girth sleeve on my thin skinned tb's dressage girth thinking it would stop his girth from rubbing (it never had, I was just worried it might) Was horrified tonight after a short schooling session to find a rub right behind his elbow which had bled. He wasn't overly warm and everything is a perfect fit so is it likely that the sleeve may be the cause of the problem. I thought they were supposed to stop rubs happening, has anyone else had this happen? Felt very mean, it looks quite sore, I bathed and applied a cool cream to it so hopefully it will heal quickly. If anyone has any other suggestions to treat it please let me know, never had this happen before and feeling very guilty.

proper wool?

treating wise I find that sudocrem is excellent (lots of experience with them have tried everything!) have had rubs with a sleeve but not bad ones (ie better with sleeve)

I use a wool sleeve every day ! when my horses coat is changing for some reason he used to get little rubs, no broken skin. I decided to get a wool sleeve and have never had problem since. I have 2, one is a cottage craft one and the other is a german make, can't remember name sorry, but you must make sure it is proper wool not synthetic, otherwise prolite make a girth sleeve which I found very good. when you do your girth up, do you stretch your horses legs out in front ? there are conflicing views on if this actually does anything, but I have always found it beneficial, you may have done the girth up and there might have been a bit of a bunch up in front of it by the elbow if you know what I mean !
