I'm shopping for an exercise sheet to use on my unclipped TB in an unheated arena. I'll be working her in temps down to -15 or so, hence the need for a sheet. The local tack shop has wool or fleece models available, the same cut and style and only a few dollars difference in price. Has anyone used wool? Pros and cons?

I use to have a wool Newmarket sheet - it was heavy and very warm. I would assume a fleece would be lighter buti never used one.
I do think the wool will kept better.

Heavens - that is cold! I would go for the wool excercise blanket. Better, imo, heat retaining qualities and will last for ever if a reputable make. Mine is so old, >30 years at least, that I cant remember what make it is. It's a Newmarket stripe one, possibly ....Horsewear Ireland. Only because most of my really old and still serviceable rugs are!

Wool does last a lot longer, but is heavier and has a very distinctive smell when wet! I have both wool and fleece lined waterproof ones. But its a lot warmer down here so we do work in the driving rain from time to time. It won't be raining at -15!

wool seems to be much warmer and also cos its heavier it tends to flap about less-fleece also tends o stretch a lot so looses its shape. i would go for wool everytime especially if price is similar

After a frank 'discussion' with the OH about this months horse-related bills (we lost our sharer and then had to have 2 vet call-outs plus her teeth needed doing. Pricey) I've decided to take the plunge and sew my own using 300gsm weight fleece. I've found a tutorial online and I think if I put in a tail cord and billet for my girth it shouldn't flap about too much. Plus I can make it in royal purple, her colour :).
Will post pics of my masterpiece when it's done...
