Morning every one. I'm looking for some recommendations, advice..... I bought my horse with a lovely professionally fitted saddle. But since his coat has changed and I've realised some of the saddle cloths I use are a little short. There is a little rub where the back panel is rubbing (his skin must be a little sensitive and more on the right side, prob my riding) so I'm thinking a half wool saddlepad numnah thing would help. But want a really good quality one that washes well. Any help, advice would be great. Thanks

I would get my saddle follow up checked as it may be that its too forward cut and the horses shoulder movement is moving the seat side to side with each stride, this will give rubs.

I can highly recommend the lemieux merino numnahs. They wash really well and after a couple of washes they are as soft as a sheepskin one. They also come in larger sizes.
However, before you invest in one, do check that your saddle will allow enough room for what may be a thicker pad than the one you are using. If its more than 6 months since your saddle was fitted to your horse (and especially if it was a new saddle) then I would be tempted to get a saddler to do another check for your peace of mind.
I would also get someone to check your riding position as well if the wear is more on one side than the other. Perhaps also do a check that your stirrups are the same length each side before you get on. One of them could have stretched (normally the side you mount from).

My mare started to get a bit of a sweat rub from hunting with cotton numnah, I bought her a le mieux sheepskin numnah and the problem has gone away :). The sheepskin is softer than the wool lined numnahs I've seen/ felt. ETA I've also heard good things about the Eskadron sheepskin slip that can be put under/ attached to your existing numnahs/ saddle cloths, I opted for a new numnah as wasn't sure I'd trust the slip to stay put all day hunting.

My mare has just started getting rubs at the back of her saddle, just like she did last winter. She is also shedding, so I think the hair becomes brittle at this time of year. She is an arab with a wiggly bum movement which doesn't help. I am using a Nuumed wool numnah this year and they are not as bad as last year's rubs, hardly more than the tips of the hair worn. Once her summer coat comes through they disappear.

I have seen a few of these in the flesh and you couldnt tell them from nuumed or other high end brands other than the cost. http://www.morpheus-designs.com/
Admin- this is not my business!

Wish I'd seen these before I bought my Rhinegold one...I thought it was the cheapest out there for around £45. It is lovely and thick though, and like the ones above, you couldn't tell it apart from some of the top end ones.
Hope you find something that works for you OP :)

I have looked at this brand. They do a short wool. Which I thought wouldn't alter the fit too much. But I will get some one out to check fit. I have noticed that lately my right stirup seems shorter than the left (I mount on the left from a mounting block) so maybe I'm then leaning heavy that side to level out stirups. Would make sense to the rub more that side. Thank you for help

having felt both and used the latter I prefer the lemieux- lasted well but did shrink a little. I also have nuumeds.

My lad also gets a similar issue, particularly when coat changing. At times he is better clipped fully out and sometimes I use a polypad as I think the wool numnahs can sometimes create a bit more pull on the hair.

I had the same problem recently - almost word for word - and when I checked my stirrups the left was an inch longer than the right. I swapped stirrups and changed the too-short fleece numnah for a nice big polypad and the sore patch is mending fast, even though we are hunting twice a week.

Try swapping the stirrup leathers, my daughter found this happened with new stirrup leathers as they stretched so we kept swapping them over.
